$twitterfeminist: there is an outpouring of support for helen joyce right now but not for me in my twitter fight with another feminist, and the cause of this discrepancy is clearly prejudice against people from my background

*me thinking*: oh okay maybe they have a point; the *cause* is that almost nobody knows who you are or who your opponent is and you have literally no footprint beyond twitter, while joyce is relatively famous and has been writing for The Economist for 15+ years, plus you were much less badly defamed than joyce was anyway, so bit nuts to think the same response would be reasonable.

Recent news out of my city made it to the Big O. It's probably not a good thing that people (and technically, myself) are sharing information about where they live on the site, but I'm really happy to see that there's other GC people here in Wokesville.

Nonnies I underestimated how hot would be this weekend and went out wearing a midi skirt and ankle socks. Now I have a really obvious tan from like just under my calf to the top of my foot 😭

I went to an estate sale today. Apparently she died in her sleep in her 90s and from what she left behind, she seems like she was a really interesting woman. She was an artist and there were years and years of nude sketches, studies for etchings, pastel drawings that she left with her. I think she painted, too, but those were mostly gone by the time I was there.

(Honestly the nude sketches were really well done but I didn't know what I would do with a two foot tall nude sketch on very flimsy paper, so... those stayed. I bought an etching though.)

I deleted my account on the Big O a couple of months ago and have never really looked back. I like having met people there and found meme via it but it wasn't for me in the end.

I did save myself an invite code so maybe someday I'll open a chill account just to talk gaming with other women but honestly, I don't miss it. I do check the Big O but have not had the urge to post so all is well.

My 30 year old brother only just found out you're not supposed to drink hot tap water because it contains more lead. This explains so much.

Walked 5ish miles today. Probably the furthest I've walked in 2 years lol. Wondering if I'll be able to get up and sit down tomorrow. xD My joints were achy even before I had my 2 years of lounging around like a root vegetable...

TiF at work trying to start a club in the women-in-$field channel. Confused why she's even there if she's the manliest man ever to have manned. Her profile photo really does looks like a woman with a fake beard, followed by an earnest "he/him"; I laughed out loud. I feel bad for her, but not bad enough to join her club.

Went to an upscale chocolate store in Chinatown today. Residents of my city might know which one I'm referring to from that description.

The art on the wall had a blurb introducing the artist as someone who used she/they pronouns; the Chinese translation provided below translated she/they as 她/她们.

I'm absolutely beyond myself with laughter. 她 is an explicitly gendered female pronoun in Chinese; it uses the 女 radical, meaning 'woman,' and was invented in the 1900s expressly because Chinese lacked gendered third-person pronouns. 们 is a suffix you attach to 'human' words to pluralize them - for example, you might add 们 to 孩子 'child' to make 孩子们 'children.' In other words, their translation of a 'singular gender-neutral pronoun' is both explicitly gendered and explicitly plural.

I don't even think this was a machine translation, either. I think someone simply did not understand.

Went to a Dante's Inferno exhibit. Two 16th century books, side by side: one original, one unauthorized copy. The first one ended with a latin inscription that meant "Do not pirate this book". The other was identical, except that line was missing and instead it just said "THE END".

I'm at the stage of not giving a fuck about my appearance that when I go on holiday I'm just gonna put my sunglasses on over my glasses. Who needs contact lenses when the backs of your ears are roomy enough to hook multiple things over them?

Noticed today that someone had spray-painted PED SCUM and STOP GROOMERS over the 'support trans women' drag queen mural in my city. I don't condone vandalism, but I laughed.

Visited the village of Quorn. I liked that there were buildings with names like "Quorn Baptist Church". Made it feel like I was near a weird cult devoted to worshipping meat-replacement products. (Apparently the "foodstuff" (quotes since not actually edible, imo) is named after the village, tho iunno why)

Am making an effort to explore my local area instead of hermiting indoors, for once. Discovered that in the time I'd been living here, they basically built a big park a few streets behind my home without me noticing, so that was nice. It used to be suuuuper sketch round there; there was a greenish space but it was just a dried out lawn with cctv and barbed wire on all sides, where it felt like walking on it was a way of saying "pls stab me". They've put some trees and flowers in, plus a path, the cctv has been swapped out for some pretty houses with rosebushes, and now it's nice except for the shirtless men shirtlessing up the place. Can't have everything. But am pleased bc the council make noises about destroying a local green space every so often, citing for its replacement a park that doesn't exist yet and probably never will, so at least we've got an alternative that looks like it's there to stay.

But also discovering how prices have changed nearer by; now when I see a bacon roll on a cafe menu for 4.50 I'm like "how reasonable!" rather than "I guess I'll starve then" bc they're like 7.50 most places these days. Loads of places closed and were replaced over lockdown so there are streets where I don't recognise anything and it feels a bit like being on holiday. Tho every other place is a wine bar so they kinda blend together. There's a fad for korean bbq, replacing the earlier fad for bao buns (am wondering if those were so omnipresent bc they were microwaveable, in which case I side-eye the prices even harder). Am mostly happy bc I like korean bbq but am worried it'll push out the Korean bbq joints that are actually good in favor of places that just microwave some old beef and pour supermarket sauce on it.
