Should I watch it? Is it good?

I watched the first few seasons and it was excellent, but stopped because my own depression made me not want to continue. Also one of the characters came out as ace, I think? And I figured it was just gonna become more and more woke anyway.

Thanks, I was wondering if I should watch it on my own since I'd be watching it with someone who has a history of depression and who doesn't really like downer stuff... whereas I love that shit, the more dark and depressing the better. (No issues with a character *being* ace but... does it really need a 'coming out'? xD I feel like if you really genuinely were like 'HOLD ON EVERYONE HAVE WE CONSIDERED OUR ~ASEXUAL REPRESENTATION~??', you wouldn't actually want a character to come along and go 'hello everybody, my name is ace mcacerson and I am ace'; it'd just look like a story with no romance...)

It doesn't really get more woke beyond Todd's aceness, thankfully. It remains messy and excellent and heartbreaking.

I watched the first three episodes today! Enjoying it so far. :) I kind of wish I had a bigger screen since I think there are a lot of visual puns with the props that I'm missing because my eyesight's so bad. xD

His disgust at Diane's bf in ep 1 reminded me of Chris Fleming's 'Meeting Boyfriends' sketch (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEEcyTGTGxs)

And I wondered why Sarah Lynn's party guests were lemurs; according to reddit it's because they love getting high: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYXoCHLqr4o . I think I've seen this clip before, actually, but I forgot.

Saw the episode where Princess Carolyn is just getting excited to go out for gelato with Bojack, only for him to get a bad phonecall, get really depressed, slump down on the pavement and cancel. I laughed too hard, been in her situation there many times over the years (well, not with an ex trying to rekindle things to run away from their own problems, luckily, but just where you meet up with someone for a fun day out but your emotions are completely out of sync in the 'they are too depressed to enjoy anything that day' direction, and you also totally predicted it would happen, but dared to hope. I think I've literally had cancelled-gelato before. So yeah, laughed very, very hard. Pleased to see someone observe and record that dynamic. :P).

Finished S1! Currently have the opening music stuck in my head. I want to search out episode details I might have missed, but I don't want to get spoiled loads for the later seasons, so if anyone knows interesting S1 things, feel free to share here. :D

You can see what's going to happen a mile off but you still hope he'll surprise you, buuuuuut nope.

That may be the most depressing thing I've seen on TV. <3 it.

More of my Bojack thoughts which nobody asked for! Finished s2! Oddly cheerful finale after that penultimate episode... Some vaguely spoilery thoughts:

(Todd fans may wish to look away here)
I gotta say, I don't get why Todd is a character. I mean, I get it, he's there for not-very-funny gags and *zany* adventures. But I don't get why all his stuff wasn't just edited out because he adds nothing.

Princess Carolyn continues to be my fave. Okay, so it takes her a while to notice that various men are terrible, but once she does, she doesn't hesitate! And she's driven and great at her job. I like people like that.

I feel like they kinda scrumpled up Diane's character this season. I don't really like plots with self-made drama anyway (ok, all Bojack's problems are self-made, but the mess tends to be created by the self of 10+ years ago, and/or so big it's now unfixable, so I find that less annoying). I just can't empathise with characters involved in the sorts of plots that can be solved with a phonecall, because I always prefer just having the damn phonecall to not. But yeah, I found the shift weird, especially her being so rude to Wanda. She seemed to get much flatter as a character.

Still cringe when I think about the deer.

Saw the under the sea episode! (Fish Out Of Water). I didn't know that was actually the title when I watched it, but I still laughed at the twist on that phrase, so hah the nondialogue was super effective. Made me wonder how many other shows had an ep like this (I think I'm only aware of 'Hush' from Buffy). Enjoyed it a lot, anyway, especially the last joke, and helps that the show is dark enough that perilous sequences can actually feel like they have stakes.

Oh also, from the start, the implied ending of the line so that it now goes, "You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him sink". :P I like that the writers seem to really love some good old fashioned wordplay.

Saw the abortion episode. I had high hopes because the clips I'd seen from it were really irreverent, but the episode was a bit too lecturey for my tastes. Less lecturey than most things om US TV on the subject, but still, I was annoyed. They did the whole "Don't worry, everyone, women make jokes about this to deal with Difficult Feelings!". Because we're never allowed to just make jokes about things. And I'm not really a fan of comedy trying to justify its own existence mid-episode. Oh well.

Not specifically S1, but there are a lots of recurring background characters (as in, characters in the literal background with no role in the plot). Sometimes they even have ongoing stories of their own that span multiple seasons.

Cool! I've noticed that mr peanutbutter is always shouting out to "Erica", and the details of his greetings are quite surreal ("where did that tooth come from?"). Maybe I should be paying more attention to try to work out if she's an animal and what type...

Beatrice Horseman's backstory is both the most ridiculous gothic wonderfulness ever and also far too close to some of the irl circumstances of an older relative in my family and I need all the fic from her perspective! If they'd treated it seriously enough to do as a novel, I bet it would've made a stir. I love the novelistic quality of those parts of the show in general; the aesthetic doesn't quite make sense for the time period but otoh I love Tenessee Williams and you can tell they do too. And I think there's also some Dickensian influence.
