Got a WIP you're excited about? Want to rave about your fave? Or is your fandom absolutely in love with a character who detracts from every scene they bumble into, and you need somewhere to vent? You're in the right place!

Date: 2021-05-17 10:19 pm (UTC)Still finding it a bit eh. Am enjoying Page Sinclair, though! I <3 the 40s style repartee. But in general feels like too many people are obsessing over their mental health and What It Means To Be A Good Person and I don't care. It feels like the writers have got a bit too attached to the characters and the comedy suffers for it. They're definitely playing up Princess Carolyn as an enabler/corrupter this season, which is fair enough since hey at least it adds some variety, though am a bit sad because she's my fave. But I did laugh that she was like "wtf these students didn't even buy alcohol", bc I've been struck by how *childish* the students are on this. They come across as closer to 12 than 18. I know it's poking fun but it's also just weird when the show itself seems to be taking their unrealistic reactions seriously. And then the hinge of the season this time around doesn't feel convincing, though many of the elements feel like the shoulllld work. But "Penny traumatised by Bojack showing up again with Sarah Lynn when she was previously fine" works as a gag, but I just don't think she'd have panic attacks years later over what happened. Acute embarrassment and rage, sure. I worry they thought they needed to do Responsible Storytelling and the show suffered for it, because it sacrificed some realism to tell the "right" story. Still a few more eps, will see how it goes.

Date: 2021-05-19 08:44 pm (UTC)One thing we did wonder: wtf was going on with PC's dress in the last episode? It was so weird! And yet the internet seems to have no thoughts on it??? I wondered if it was some sort of pun and if I knew anything whatsoever about fashion design I'd recognise a bunch of cat-themed features or something. Or maybe it was just based on some famous dress...
Anyway, attempting to search it led to the wonderful world of bojack cosplay; allow me to present:

Yeah, whatever her reasons, I support her! :P But I'm still curious. Re: trends, I agree, and I feel like part of her character is that she genuinely likes what's trendy, which is why she's so good at selling stuff. If she likes something, she can assume that others will.
Pahaha I need to go searching out an outfit compilation now. I think my fave was her "rachel" haircut though. x'D

Date: 2021-05-19 11:41 pm (UTC)I do like how the dress was a mess because it tried to do everything at once, which is very PC. But it also kind of grew on me because it was weird and she's a pink cat lady who does what she wants. I imagine a lot of people saw the dress and went "wtf? ...ok, fine." To me that fits with how people might react to PC in general.
Did you see Gina's billboard in S6, btw? Saw you mentioned her above and didn't want to spoil it for you!

Re: Bojack Horseman
Date: 2021-05-19 11:57 pm (UTC)I also wondered if maybe she was adamant that the design ended up with a fancy collar of some sort, since she's a cat.

Date: 2021-05-20 09:37 am (UTC)Something I really liked about that poem-- normally, I wayyyy prefer reading poems in my head, and I find hearing them spoken aloud ruins them. But guessing that was designed to be acted from the start, and the voice acting was sososo good, so I enjoyed it as a reminder of what poetry can actually do when done right. And I did have to laugh a bit at how the writers had placed it so that any technical criticism could be waved off ("well, butterscoth was a failed writer and it's his poem"), and it would work whatever the reaction; have so used that trick before.
(Also there's something... relaxing about watching a show that seems to encourage you to think about how it's constructed, instead of getting offended that you're so much as seeing it as a construction. And that relaxed feeling makes it easier for me to empathise with the more emotional side.)
