Never written anything for it, but I'm getting weirdly into Alien worldbuilding. I mean: https://alienanthology.fandom.com/wiki/Arceon . This is nutty but I love it. Hoping to think of a way to do a crossover with my main fandom.

(whoops, forgot to add subject) Also admire this devotion to worldbuilding before the Alien:Isolation release: https://twitter.com/MikeTanaka2095 ; worth scrolling back to the start and reading in chronological order! (wish twitter made that easier to do +_+)

Does the alien kill people because it's an envious grouch, because its head is very heavy and it thinks it's not fair? I wonder sometimes.

I <3 the way Alien fans talk about the Alien. There'll be a video of it stalking and killing people and they're all like "clever girl!!! <3 <3 <3". They're so supportive and proud.

FF7. Such a fun world to play with! And a good variety of characters. Apparently when they were making it the development ethos was "anything goes", so it makes a great sandbox...

:D

There are a few people I want to invite, but I'm waiting for one to get on dreamwidth so I can give her the url, and another never checks her messages, so I may have to post a fic just so people know to contact me about it...

---

"We've got to stop meteor!" said Tifa. "Before everyone--"

"Nah, don't worry, it'll be fine." Cloud logged onto dreamwidth.org. "Did you hear that there's this cool new space for fans, a secret space where--"

"Cloud, please, we don't have time for this!" Tifa gazed up at the ball of flame. "Everyone is going to die unless--"

"The secret fan space is a pan-fandom, feminist-friendly, anonymous board, which means anyone is free to speak her mind. Sick of gender drama? Sick of antishippers? Then you've found the right place! And what's more--"

"Cloud, we need to go, now!" Tifa paused as a shadow appeared above. "What...?" Her eyes widened. The black cape was unmistakeable. "Sephiroth?!"

"Hello..." Sephiroth floated down to the ground. "Did I hear something about a fandom space where I can ship whomever I please?"

"You did!" said Cloud, and the two men frenched.

---

(Originally I wrote this as Tifa being ooc, but it felt too rude to her to cast *Cloud* as the sane one, lol).

Hahahaha oh good lord, I can't even

Is it the word "frenched" that sends it over the edge?

I adore Cloud, but Cloud is never the sane one. Unless he's talking to Reeve, in which case, maaaybe.

Yeah, I think if you have, like, Cloud, Barret and Yuffie, Cloud will come out of it looking alright. But Tifa may be the sanest character in that game... or Red. I just remember where you find Vincent, and he's all "I had to atone for my sins!!!", and Tifa's just like, "So you... slept? That's weird."

Yuffie mostly gets a pass in my mind because she's 16. You can be weird and make poor choices at that age without being insane (although Cloud is also mentally 16/17 in a lot of ways, but a lot of his in-game weirdness comes from uh... sanity damage). I think for most other characters, I was thinking "sane" as in "makes (ir)rational decisions," but for Cloud I was thinking "detached from reality".

You may right about Barret, either way. I was weighing his down-to-earth moments against his extreme ones, then remembered he literally attached a gun to his arm. At the same time he adopted Marlene! Pretty sure we're not *supposed to* examine that too closely, both because it's a gun-hand and because it's a metaphor for how he fights to protect the future but can't let go of the past or something profound like that. And there really IS something profound and interesting about that! Except it goes into funny/sad/absurd territory once you think about how long-lasting and intense his revenge thing is, and contrast with how he's a good dad. I wish I had any writing skill at all; there are so many directions one could go with a fic about him raising Marlene without ever finding a more functional (or non-lethal) prosthetic than a gun. How many times did he have to go "yeah, this is fine" instead of "y'know what would be handy right now?"

However! Maybe he did have a prosthetic hand? The guns could be swapped out without a medical procedure. Maybe the gun attachment was only installed when he expected he might need it. Well, now I've gone down another rabbit hole.

There IS a hand attachment! But only requested after the end of the first game, which is extra ridiculous: https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Sakaki
https://thelifestream.net/novels-novellas/episodebarret/

I don't even know what to do with the rest of this (aside from giggle every few months about how they gave Barret A HAMMER HAND). Barret's mid-conversation screaming comes off so much better in a low-poly videogame than it does in a serious-toned novella. How could they not see that?? Maybe it's a translation thing? Anyway, couldn't deal with the Compilation when it started coming out. Still can't XD

As I continued to watch X-Men Mutant Academy 2 vids out of nostalgia, I was surprised to notice Nightcrawler was carrying a sword; wtf how did I forget he carried a sword? I remembered he was Kurt Wagner, Mystique's son, the blue teleporting gymnast with a tail and yellow eyes-- and yet the *sword* made me go "WAT". But now I do remember he fancied himself as a romantic pirate... though iirc he also got ordained as a priest? Comics, man.

I have been at fandom loose ends for a couple of years. I mostly do Yuletide and hope for something to catch my attention full time again. (My past is littered with fandoms, from Buffy to Superwholock to the MCU, though.)

Ooh, ages back I drafted a Buffy/Good Omens comedy crossover fic. It was a bit shit so I never posted it, but I'd like to come back to Buffy sometime.

Buffy is such a good fandom. There are a million and one problematic elements, but that just makes it more fun to discuss, not less. That fic sounds like an interesting idea.

(I also think the show's age helps. Tons of fandom scolds will give ships or characters from Buffy a pass because it was part of their sexual awakening.)

yeah, tbh I'm not all that into good omens and thought it was overhyped, but it was on at the time and everyone was losing their minds over it and posting everywhere, so I was vaguely wondering if there was any fic for it I'd ever write, and liked the idea of the mythologies bashing up against each other (tho only the *mythologies*, so I'd already diverged from the fandom). I like Buffy much better but I think I'd struggle with the character voices, there's a lot of pop-culture-referencing and I live in a cave.

Buffy dialogue was so stylized that I found the voices pretty easy to capture, FWIW. (It was the only fandom where I was ever close to BNF-dom, so I am going to at least slightly trust the judgment of those who kept telling me I nailed the voices.)

NA barging in here to say that I DO like Good Omens and was an old-school book fan who thought the show was great! And enjoyed the active fandom even if some of the characterizations were...off! Until even other fucking Crowley/Aziraphale fic became slash in name only, because AZIRAPHALE ALWAYS HAD A FUCKING VAGINA. JUST WRITE HET IF YOU WANT PIV THAT BADLY, YOU FUCKERS, JFC.

Ahem. Anyway, it pissed me off and I had to be EXTREMELY careful when complaining about it on FFA because you know why. But it pretty much ruined the fandom for me.

I've never read anything by her, but I've heard only good things. Would the Scorpio races be a good place to start? I'm afraid of starting a 4? book series by a new-to-me author.

The Scorpio Races would probably be a good choice! I personally struggled with it, but I think that was because I read it right after The Raven Cycle and wasn't really over it. The Scorpio Races does seem to be a lot of people's fave!

If you like magical realism, I REALLY loved All The Crooked Saints, which seems to be the most controversial one (people either love it or think it's too out there).

They're all YA, so they're all pretty quick easy reads, I would say. I would avoid her other books to start, because while still YA I think they skew a little younger. I haven't read them yet but at this point I would read anything by her. Her writing style is amazing!

Let me know if you end up reading any of it! I'm a Maggie evangeliser now ha!

It's on my list! So are >300 other books. We'll have to wait and see if the mood strikes me. I find that the more controversial books tend to be the ones I connect with more, so that's a helpful suggestion....
