A space to chat fandom! Anon!

Got a WIP you're excited about? Want to rave about your fave? Or is your fandom absolutely in love with a character who detracts from every scene they bumble into, and you need somewhere to vent? You're in the right place!

Not a poster but I've read there FOREVER, or at least since Brenden days. It used to be incredibly cruel, then improved, then became increasingly woke, then for awhile there were some awesome GC posters who peaked a ton of people. Then new mods banned them all and it's TRA central now. Trans/sexuality posts are always wild.

Anyway, there's a Kehlani post about her coming out as a lesbian and it's exactly what I expected, LOL. "Sexual preference" is everywhere and there's a few posters who are gonna DIE on that hill telling lesbians they're transphobic.

All of this! I've been lurking on there since the blue layout days. It's been so disappointing to see it swirl down the drain into TRA hell. I don't even read new posts because tbh I've seen some innocuous posts go OT and start being about trans issues and I just don't even have the energy anymore.

AYRT

It's weird because for awhile there it was pretty GC and the mods seemed to support that? Then I came back one day and all the GC posters had been banned and it was TRA hell. I have no idea what happened. There are still a few gay guys and a lesbian or two who try to argue back, at least.

It's such a weird relic of the internet and I have to admire how it's lived through LJ's rise and fall. Sometimes I wonder what the Russians who bought LJ think of it, LOL.

Yeah, I forgot it was on lj still; surreal to see it! I wonder how many people are actively following? I think I saw the number 100000 floating around, but I'm guessing that's just accounts, not necessarily active ones.

Yeah, LJ is such a ghost town now that even the tiny shitty ONTD posts get a comment telling them CONGRATZ! for being a top 5 post on the site, LOLOL. It's sad...LJ was like the peak fandom experience back in the day and nobody's ever found a good replacement, IMO.

Yeah, I'm annoyed people didn't move to dreamwidth because... it's the same. Just no ads. But no, they picked bloody *tumblr*. I know dreamwidth doesn't handle images gracefully, but that's part of its charm! tbh I still dream of dreamwidth suddenly getting popular, even though I know it's unlikely. I think those slightly more closed-off communities are good for fandom.

Man, Tumblr was good for gifs and that's about it. I HATE that there's no privacy in the tags - one of my OTPs years back was Sarah/Helena from Orphan Black, and because the fandom as a whole was really judgy they started freaking out if you shipped the clones together, let alone the twin sisters. And the official account for the show CONSTANTLY hung out in the tags doin' their CORPORATE SYNERGY and acting like a fandom babysitter, so you couldn't post anything even slightly edgy without massive pile-ons.

OFC now Tumblr is the lesser of evils compared to Twitter, which is just a trash fire.

Ugh, it sounds awful. :( I was involved in fandom until 2010ish, on fandom-specific forums, THE WAY GOD INTENDED; took a break because the community was imploding a bit and I'd got busy with other things, and when I came back the remainder of the community had burned down and scattered, and any alright people from beforehand whom I could still find were kind of crawling out of the ashes muttering about the horrors of antis. So I think I missed the worst of the Tumblr Judgement Age re: fandom (still saw enough socjus discourse to last 20000 lifetimes) and it does at least seem like things are swinging back a bit now... But I completely missed that official accounts were doing that shit! Way to completely kill a fandom before it could get started!

I've never even attempted to do twitter. Don't have an account, don't want one. I guess I can see why artists use it post-tumblr-nsfw-ban, but I don't know why anyone else does. Forums already existed. Why did people switch to a platform which hampered communication in every possible way. Gah.

Apparently there's an ONTD anonmeme where all the users are shitting on each other, but I don't know where it is. ;__; I just wanna see if some of the former terf-posters are there!

I...think I found it? I found an anonmeme that is active and has posts from today, anyway. IDK if I should link it here or if that would incite drama. But I just googled ONTD anon and it came up in like the first two results.

Haven't seen any TERFery yet but have seen some comments mocking users that I don't like, so I'm about to settle in!

Well this made me curious; I found one where, at a glance, the front page was a bunch of comments like 'adam driver's cock' and the last page was like 'i miss racism'. One of the most internetty things I've seen in a while.

sa Okay it's making me laugh that this anonmeme has more activity than actual ONTD. Just looking through the last few pages, it's mostly BTS wank, which is boring to me. However, this bit got mentioned twice because it's so good:

I like BTS and I'm getting to know Olivia. There's room for everyone (except Demi Lovato. She sucks).

Demi goes by they now instead of she. I know they're annoying but, for the sake of other users who choose they/them pronouns, respecting their pronouns is worth the courtesy.

For some reason, I can't edit my comment in this post (but can in others). Thanks for noting. I don't follow her enough to have remembered this.

Lmaoooo, incredible.

Although this just reminds me, there aren't enough eye-rolls in the world to express how I feel every time I see someone reply to a comment about Demi Lovato (or Courtney Stodden or whoever's recently come out as NB) with something like, "Just so you know, they use they/them pronouns! I know they're annoying, but misgendering is wrong <3" and then the OP is like, "Omg I'm soooo sorry for being offensive and ignorant, editing my post right now!!! Thank you for educating me!!" like...love urself, OP.

I know people mostly complain about neopronouns now and see they/them as an acceptable compromise, but fuck to that. I've read a few books now (and some fic) with enby characters and it. is. incomprehensible. Especially when there's a group of people and the they/them is in it. "They laughed." Who laughed? Fuck if I know!

My view on they/them is basically that if we accept the premises that they/them belongs to a specific identity and that misgendering is bad, then we shouldn't be using singular they as a neutral term.

Accepting this use case of they/them is essentially the claim it connects to a specific gender identity. If so, then everytime I refer to someone with they/them without knowing their pronouns, I'm still rolling the misgendering dice.

Yeah, I think neopronouns are *more* comprehensible in that context. "They" is easy to understand in some contexts but the average full-length story ain't one of them. I thought that was stupid long before I even peaked.
