I know people mostly complain about neopronouns now and see they/them as an acceptable compromise, but fuck to that. I've read a few books now (and some fic) with enby characters and it. is. incomprehensible. Especially when there's a group of people and the they/them is in it. "They laughed." Who laughed? Fuck if I know!

My view on they/them is basically that if we accept the premises that they/them belongs to a specific identity and that misgendering is bad, then we shouldn't be using singular they as a neutral term.

Accepting this use case of they/them is essentially the claim it connects to a specific gender identity. If so, then everytime I refer to someone with they/them without knowing their pronouns, I'm still rolling the misgendering dice.

Yeah, I think neopronouns are *more* comprehensible in that context. "They" is easy to understand in some contexts but the average full-length story ain't one of them. I thought that was stupid long before I even peaked.
