Current project is a dark political fanfic, it's 20k+ words, and it's probably very, very bad. I don't even know where I'm going to publish it because parts are grotesque and my ao3 account doesn't have anything as gross on there. I feel like I shouldn't surprise people who read my lighter stuff. But I also want people who *like* my darker stuff to be able to find it. It's in that weird territory where it's almost-but-not-quite-AU. It may be very very embarrassing, anyway. BUT ALSO it's been sat on my harddrive for a year and I just want to get it posted and over with so I don't have to think about it any more. Arghhhhhhhh

I wanted to write a Harry Potter AU in which transactivism comes to Hogwarts. I got as far as working out where different characters would stand on it. But writing HP fic is tough; I'm not keen on writing for book canons because they already have a writing style and it's not mine, so it feels like I should read them first so I get the author's "voice"-- but mine would be a poor imitation, anyway. But feels like a different universe entirely when written in a different style. So I dunno. But I had a lot of fun thinking out the fic.

Where do you think they'd stand on it? I can't figure out if Hermione would be gung-ho or if she'd turn into a strident terf, LOL.

I think she'd follow a standard radfem journey. Start off sympathetic, though like 'they're not literally women tho', then go 'wtf' when people started saying that and terf out. Am thinking of how little time she had for Trelawney, etc; I think she's quite rigid in her thinking (might go a bit too far the other way and think dysphoria was always made up imo, then slowly settle back a bit), and would just be swayed a bit at first because of the gaslighting (vs eg: McGonagall, whom I think would take one look at transactivism and be like "Absolutely Not").

Harry would go along at first but would be skeptical internally, and probably go where Hermione led. Ron would make the transphobe>TRA>calling-himself-a-male-feminist journey, again mostly because Hermione would refuse to speak to him otherwise. There'd be some weird uneasy Gryffindor-Slytherin alliances over it, a mixed showing from Ravenclaw and I think Hufflepuff would mostly be on the trans train. Harry would be quite irritated that Malfoy, of all people, seemed to be one of the few recognising it as nonsense. Crabbe and Goyle might say they were transwomen for the status, not sure. Hagrid would be a loud TRA until he witnessed a mtf vs f boxing match (or equivalent), and would then be quite perplexed and distressed trying to make sense of it all. Ginny would be a total TRA (protective over Neville, who would have convinced himself he was a girl); Luna would have started out curious and positive toward it and then abandoned it with the observation that the people 'weren't very nice'; Umbridge would be running Mermaids, and Trelawney would have 60 genders. Dumbledore would have a dark past as a Queer Theorist.

Snape looks down on everyone involved, and hopes the TRAs and the feminists eliminate each other. He plays along when he has a chance to take points from Gryffindor, and would relish the chance to call Hermione a silly little terf, but he is himself likely to sneer at the pupils with atypical pronouns, refuse to acknowledge them and mock/belittle anyone attempting to pass in his presence; I think he posts derisive things on kiwifarms. He is unable to hide his disdain but nobody ever bothers him with a potential cancellation.

Rita Skeeter is a fun one because she could go either way! I think since the money's with transactivism, she'd be more likely to be writing trash for a paper like vox. But at some point she'd get cancelled for past indiscretions, since she'd make an easy scapegoat (older woman) and there would be a lot of dirt on her, and she would then switch. She'd probably spend a lot of column inches on the appearances of the men involved. Plus tbf she'd be more likely to be on the Daily Mail payroll when things first kicked off, so she might just take their line from the start.

SA

I found my old notes! I was writing the above from memory. So (there'll be some repetition, and I prefer some of the newer ideas tbh) I'll add for completeness' sake:

Harry: Quietly skeptical, 'Harry could see that this wasn't a woman'; tries to be nice; is not gratuitously cruel; privately thinks the women seem quite reasonable, though thinks they are a bit harsh.

Ron: Initially cruel in a clueless sort of way (and probably uses t-slur), then goes fullblown TRA for a bit, until Hermione snaps at him (and cries ;_;), at which point he goes quiet. Harry later sees him waving an anti-transactivism banner (one that's probably still a bit off, like 'there are 2 genders!')

Hermione: Standard feminist journey. Was initially pro, though always skeptical of 'gender identity'. Is first one of the trio to catch onto the danger; Harry didn't much care since it didn't affect him. Is annoyed that the others don't seem to care as much or get how important it is.

McGonagall: Ultra terf 9000%

Hagrid: At first an ardent TRA. Later sees a boxing match, 'hang a minute...'; realises there's a problem. Distressed trying to make it work.

Trelawney: Trelawney has 60 genders.

Umbridge: Mermaids CEO.

Fred & George: Cautioned for 'hate-speech'.

Neville: Immediately starts wondering if he's a girl. Gets taken in for a bit.

Luna: Would be in the TRA crowd, for a bit, then decide they're not very nice.

Voldemort: Tom Riddle would play along but think it was all bullshit; he'd use them as he uses the werewolves, while despising them. He'd incorporate it into his rhetoric and keep them at arms' length. He'd use them as stepping stones, flatter them until he got into power, then turn on them when it suited him.

Slytherin: The pro-trans parts of Slytherin would have been gay-bashers 3 minutes ago, now TRAs and entreating everyone to 'protect the queers or else'. Most are probably loud about being 'allies' while holding people at arm's length.

Lupin: Quietly disapproving, uneasy and wary; he knows the crowd; this is not the crowd. This crowd reminds him of another crowd, who hated his crowd.

Sirius: Bit of a dick; will talk about women's rights but he mostly just likes mocking. Would probably be a TRA if he thought that was the side of good. Think he'd start out attacking 'terfs' and then do a 180 when he encountered the TRA literalists, since turns out he does know what a woman when he's the one being propositioned.

Arthur: Far too nice about TRAs

(One I wondered about: Molly Weasley. On the one hand, she's prone to believing rubbish she reads in tabloids at the expense of other women, and I could see her being all, "poor little trans girls, just let them play!" On the other hand, she's had 7 kids; she knows what a woman is. My notes come down on that side but maybe that's wishful thinking.)

Ginny: Total TRA like lol, gets into fights with Molly. Maybe identifies as a boy for a while. Mayyyybe changes her mind when she sees how some others treat Neville and Luna for asking questions, maybe not.

Rita Skeeter: Works for Pink News.

Snape: Sees what's going on but hates feminists, so is amused. Not much inclined to help. Will say whatever he's told to say, but won't pretend to believe it; much curling of his lip. Thinks everyone involved is pathetic. Mocks online; hopes the feminists and the transactivists all kill each other so he doesn't have to hear any more of their 'insufferable screeching'. Likes the idea of a backlash against LGB since Lupin is gay [fuck canon on this one]. Is often telling the students to go to Lupin with any gender questions, just to make Lupin uncomfortable. Maybe hints that he knows of Lupin's secret inner terfery, to imply he could blackmail him. (I think Lupin would find this more childish and irritating than scary)

Dumbledore: Dark queer-theorist past. Perhaps Gellert Grindelwald would say 'die, cis scum!' and Dumbledore would tell himself he didn't mean it *literally*. (though tbh, I don't think Grindelwald would get taken in by it. If anything, I think he'd tease Dumbledore for giving it the time of day. The one thing Gellert would have in common with Aberforth.)

"I make mistakes like the next man. In fact, being--forgive me--rather cleverer than most men, my mistakes tend to be correspondingly huger." Dumbledore placed his old thesis on the table, and Harry saw it was bound in pink and white leather, with a pale blue title: "Gellert or Girl-ert? Queering the cisheteromugglocracy for everyone's benefit."

Does it count as a WIP if I haven't written a word? I have two ideas for fics where in a waaaaaay they're completely written in my head (I know the tone and the ending and some imagery, basically done, right? =D) but there are no words on paper and one of them has been in this state for a few months...

One is about a woman who receives an unsuitable gift and tries to make it work, and one is about a guy who obsesses over household renovations in an attempt to escape existential dread. I'm looking forward to writing them, I just love sleeping so much I keep failing to get around to it...

Finally typed up a dark comedy radfem fanfic thing. Dialogue is a bit stiff and needs a good ending, but it's been in my notebook for about half a year, so nice to have it written up at last (hoping to type up a few, but goddamn, my handwriting, and WHY did I write everything in pale green ink (answer: it was the only pen with ink left because it was a rubbish pen. D'oh.). Anyway, I'm trying to decide how much... character drama?... to put into it, or whether to just leave it as ideas-y. If it focuses more on relationships, then I think I have to give it a viewpoint and then that doesn't mesh too nicely with it being focused around an argument since it feels like a bit of an implication that the POV character is where the reader's sympathies should lie. But I don't want to hop between everyone's head because that's confusing for people who are used to reading close-third. Well, I'm thinking aloud. It's all pretty silly anyway. Just happy to be writing again.

I have a comedy novel I should go back and edit. It was basically finished but I wanted to leave it a while then reread and see if I still thought it was badically finished. Though once it IS done, I still don't know what to do with it. It started as a project to procrastinate from writing a different novel *anyway*.

Hmmmm... the next fic I was going to post is a bit 'talking heads'... but maybe it doesn't matter too much. It's a short comedy fic. The prose is uninteresting but I don't think it's worth prettying up. Just wonder if I'll see it later and be annoyed at myself for not putting more effort in.
