Got a WIP you're excited about? Want to rave about your fave? Or is your fandom absolutely in love with a character who detracts from every scene they bumble into, and you need somewhere to vent? You're in the right place!

Date: 2021-04-16 07:02 pm (UTC):D :D :D Thanks! I am so proud of my headcanons! And so annoyed at myself for still not having mustered up the discipline to write the damn fic, aaaaargh! xD

Date: 2021-04-16 07:20 pm (UTC)Rita Skeeter is a fun one because she could go either way! I think since the money's with transactivism, she'd be more likely to be writing trash for a paper like vox. But at some point she'd get cancelled for past indiscretions, since she'd make an easy scapegoat (older woman) and there would be a lot of dirt on her, and she would then switch. She'd probably spend a lot of column inches on the appearances of the men involved. Plus tbf she'd be more likely to be on the Daily Mail payroll when things first kicked off, so she might just take their line from the start.
Re: What are you writing?
Date: 2021-04-16 07:51 pm (UTC)Rita gets caught writing dreck for Pink News under the pseudonym of a gay man, and after that she goes to the Daily Mail.

I feel like Rita is most likely to get caught out not being up to date in her terminology with some passing fad. She'd get cancelled over not writing 'womxn' or something like that, meanwhile there'd be drawers of actually nasty things she'd written over the years. She might try to write something positive in her usual daily mail column, paying lip service, use unintentionally-insulting terminology, get hit hard by the backlash, go "well, fuck you too, then" and swerve back hard. Every subsequent column she wrote would note her indignation at her cancellation and remind readers how trivial her infraction was. She'd take up about half the column on it. The rest would be spent emphasising how hairy men's legs were.

Date: 2021-04-26 11:41 pm (UTC)I found my old notes! I was writing the above from memory. So (there'll be some repetition, and I prefer some of the newer ideas tbh) I'll add for completeness' sake:
Harry: Quietly skeptical, 'Harry could see that this wasn't a woman'; tries to be nice; is not gratuitously cruel; privately thinks the women seem quite reasonable, though thinks they are a bit harsh.
Ron: Initially cruel in a clueless sort of way (and probably uses t-slur), then goes fullblown TRA for a bit, until Hermione snaps at him (and cries ;_;), at which point he goes quiet. Harry later sees him waving an anti-transactivism banner (one that's probably still a bit off, like 'there are 2 genders!')
Hermione: Standard feminist journey. Was initially pro, though always skeptical of 'gender identity'. Is first one of the trio to catch onto the danger; Harry didn't much care since it didn't affect him. Is annoyed that the others don't seem to care as much or get how important it is.
McGonagall: Ultra terf 9000%
Hagrid: At first an ardent TRA. Later sees a boxing match, 'hang a minute...'; realises there's a problem. Distressed trying to make it work.
Trelawney: Trelawney has 60 genders.
Umbridge: Mermaids CEO.
Fred & George: Cautioned for 'hate-speech'.
Neville: Immediately starts wondering if he's a girl. Gets taken in for a bit.
Luna: Would be in the TRA crowd, for a bit, then decide they're not very nice.
Voldemort: Tom Riddle would play along but think it was all bullshit; he'd use them as he uses the werewolves, while despising them. He'd incorporate it into his rhetoric and keep them at arms' length. He'd use them as stepping stones, flatter them until he got into power, then turn on them when it suited him.
Slytherin: The pro-trans parts of Slytherin would have been gay-bashers 3 minutes ago, now TRAs and entreating everyone to 'protect the queers or else'. Most are probably loud about being 'allies' while holding people at arm's length.
Lupin: Quietly disapproving, uneasy and wary; he knows the crowd; this is not the crowd. This crowd reminds him of another crowd, who hated his crowd.
Sirius: Bit of a dick; will talk about women's rights but he mostly just likes mocking. Would probably be a TRA if he thought that was the side of good. Think he'd start out attacking 'terfs' and then do a 180 when he encountered the TRA literalists, since turns out he does know what a woman when he's the one being propositioned.
Arthur: Far too nice about TRAs
(One I wondered about: Molly Weasley. On the one hand, she's prone to believing rubbish she reads in tabloids at the expense of other women, and I could see her being all, "poor little trans girls, just let them play!" On the other hand, she's had 7 kids; she knows what a woman is. My notes come down on that side but maybe that's wishful thinking.)
Ginny: Total TRA like lol, gets into fights with Molly. Maybe identifies as a boy for a while. Mayyyybe changes her mind when she sees how some others treat Neville and Luna for asking questions, maybe not.
Rita Skeeter: Works for Pink News.
Snape: Sees what's going on but hates feminists, so is amused. Not much inclined to help. Will say whatever he's told to say, but won't pretend to believe it; much curling of his lip. Thinks everyone involved is pathetic. Mocks online; hopes the feminists and the transactivists all kill each other so he doesn't have to hear any more of their 'insufferable screeching'. Likes the idea of a backlash against LGB since Lupin is gay [fuck canon on this one]. Is often telling the students to go to Lupin with any gender questions, just to make Lupin uncomfortable. Maybe hints that he knows of Lupin's secret inner terfery, to imply he could blackmail him. (I think Lupin would find this more childish and irritating than scary)
Dumbledore: Dark queer-theorist past. Perhaps Gellert Grindelwald would say 'die, cis scum!' and Dumbledore would tell himself he didn't mean it *literally*. (though tbh, I don't think Grindelwald would get taken in by it. If anything, I think he'd tease Dumbledore for giving it the time of day. The one thing Gellert would have in common with Aberforth.)

Date: 2021-04-27 03:55 am (UTC)Also I'm pretty sure Sirius reads KF when he's stuck in hiding and can't go out. He gets lots of "mad at the internet" ratings and is always slapped down for trying to organize trolling plans.

Oh, man, I fear Sirius would be such an annoying netizen. I feel like he'd post impossibly smug self-righteous things on twitter where he'd pick on easy targets, interspersed with jokes that were sometimes funny and sometimes just casually sexist or otherwise crass. He'd totally share the "this person is terrible, fire them!!!" petitions and make self-important tweets about it. His friends would be like, "he's SO much better in person, trust me!" Though maybe it'd be okay if he got on the internet in the olden days and lived in weird little corners of forums from the start. I just fear he's too sociable so he'd interact with the internet like a person who goes outside, and that leads nowhere good. XD Lupin's social media would be funny, if occasionally a bit wanky and overly introspective. He totally had an lj.
