Re: Fandom Things
Date: 2023-07-11 05:12 pm (UTC)The histrionics about Evil Cloudfare are a good case in point about their messed-up priorities. How DARE AO3 apparently use them! But, then, I also think that DDOS protections should be as content-agnostic as possible, as if they're not, it's your content someone doesn't like that people will come for next. (FFA: "Cloudflare supported that evil place too long! They're bad!" Me: "Cloudflare knuckled under like cowards. They're untrustworthy.") Hell, I feel that way about most services, like, say, baking. It's like these idiots have forgotten why you can't use PayPal to pay for a DW account.
I remember when being a free speech maximalist was a popular opinion in fandom, and I miss it.

Date: 2023-07-11 05:29 pm (UTC)I remember when it was popular in fandom and in tech. We are so fucked. :')

Re: Fandom Things
Date: 2023-07-11 06:18 pm (UTC)(I don't know why I live in hope. I should fucking know better. All telling people the implications of X, Y, or Z does is get you on someone's shitlist. On the other hand, this is why I roll my eyes at most tech conspiracy theories. Guys, we're collectively not smart enough in the industry to pull that shit off. Most of our road to hell was paved with someone in PM or marketing's idea of good intentions.)

Don't have faith in their intellect either. This gen seems to take getting witchhunted as a lesson to go witchhunt better.

Date: 2023-07-11 11:12 pm (UTC)"I'm genuinely impressed that AO3 managed to get Cloudflare set up and more or less working.
Whatever you may think of Cloudflare's ethics as a company, that is a normal industry solution that OTW managed to implement on a normal human timescale. By recent standards, this is shockingly functional of them."
I haven't kept up with ao3, so no opinions on dysfunction or otherwise, but lol, Cloudflare is extremely easy to set up. "Wah wah wah change your whole codebase to cater to my drama", meanwhile, usually isn't, and as a lurker I've noticed that's what people are usually asking ao3 for.
Also lol at the person in that thread sulking because they got told to comment their code before it would be accepted.

Date: 2023-07-11 11:22 pm (UTC)So, you're saying a site that has been up since 2009 hasn't needed ddos protection in all those 14 years. Sounds like they prioritized their tasks right. Not like they lose business with downtime. 🤷

Re: Fandom Things
Date: 2023-07-11 06:07 pm (UTC)This dan remembers when LGB content kept getting removed if you didn't warn for slash. I still have no idea why current fandom legitimately thinks, "Yes but my ideas are more right with extra fries and justice!" will ever stop such rules from being exploited against them if they start down the Content Removal Path.

Date: 2023-07-11 06:16 pm (UTC)It's why I think the original OTW vision needs to be preserved as far as possible, unpopular as it is. I don't know if I'm a full-blooded free speech maximalist. A stint working in a field pertaining to child abuse has made me extremely anti-sharing of child sexual abuse material, but I'll be the first to say that a lot of fic really doesn't meet that bar no matter what fandom screams.
I think it's possible to both agree the farms are a hive of scum and villainy and also think it is necessary for some value of ecosystem necessity.
Re: Fandom Things
Date: 2023-07-11 06:22 pm (UTC)I feel that there's a variant of this when people smugly assure themselves that no platforming isn't silencing so it's ok to not be content-agnosticism. Well yes and no. If you go around asking every platform you can to no platform someone, then there's no two ways about it: it's an organised attempt to silence.
It's not the same as IRL silencing but it's clear this is part of the connective tissue of civil society these days.
