First episode is up! Guess I'm watching that tomorrow. :D Glad they didn't stretch it beyond 3 seasons. (Partly because I wanna reread the whole manga when they're done and then read Fruits Basket: Another :p)

Saw that first ep! Forgot how bad the music was. The ending theme is alright, but that opening, whyyyy. Funnily enough, I disliked almost everything about the original anime *but* the music. But at least this one follows the manga and is pretty (SO much lens flare, lol. But I love it!) One day we'll get something that does both pictures and sounds right...

This version preserves all the melodrama, darkness and abuse so I like it much better, anyway. The first anime was kinda saccharin and had Tohru giving a sappy life-lesson-lecture each episode. Was not a fan. I heard Natsuki Takaya wasn't pleased with what they'd done with it, and fell out with them (and iirc I'd also heard she'd requested that director specifically in the first place, so wow). Though idk the details. Might have been for some other reason. Just happy I got an anime that's pure melodrama amd misery at last. Ren Sohma has shown up and I remember this arc of the manga being fucking *weird*. =D

Saw the next couple eps. It's as deliciously fucked up as I remember. We're finally at the bit where my fave couple shows up. When I first read the manga, I loved reading all the positive relationships and shipped all the happy healthy couples. But now I just want to see the awful couple treating each other terribly and being brats. <3

Near the end now... I'm kinda curious if they're going to show Katsuya/Kyoko's relationship backstory. So far they've followed the manga pretty much exactly, but that one is so incredibly questionable I wonder if they'll chicken out.

But yeah, latest episode reached the bit where Nxvgb fgnof Xherab. I'm just picturing Shigure like "lololol, about time someone did that!" I feel like he'd privately be a bit proud. I mean, if nothing else, that's not someone who does things by halves. This time around, watching, I wondered if partly Akito was motivated by guilt, and it was sort of a crazed attempt to wipe everything away, kind of saying 'sorry' in the only way Akito knows how. I find Akito SO entertaining on this watch, it's unreal.

Also hahaha my friend just noticed *that* maid, and was like "I feel like she's the biggest villain in this?", which I confirmed. :P Though actually, I think they've made her a bit more sympathetic in the show than in the manga. The bit where she talks about how she was trying to comfort Akito with the box came off as genuine. It makes me wonder how much stuff I read as her just being a dick for the sake of it should have been read as being motivated by her caring for Akito (and just being a massive enabler in the process).

I wish they'd translated "unnecessary" as "worthless" or something; again the translation feels a bit stiff. Thouuuugh I did see in the next episode preview that the "I'm disillusioned" line is now "I'm disappointed in you", which I think is a more sensible translation.

Also Kureno is the *definition* of someone who is so good at being nice, he fails at being kind. When I read the manga, I found him a bit of a nothing character, but he works better in the anime. Seems more vulnerable (same for Rin, too). Maybe I just didn't really understand his position properly when I first read it, and it was easier to follow a second time.

Yesss, hit the scene and "I'm disappointed in you" is a MUCH better translation. I think that's the only one I've preferred so far to the Tokyopop translation. But yeah, that line in the Tokyopop translation was a bit of mess, imo; it's such a dramatic moment and that just made it stiff and weird and confusing. When do you ever say "I'm disillusioned" to put someone down? Glad they fixed it.

I want to write some messed up Akigure, but I should probably wait for the season to end since I want to get the background info accurate and it's years since I read the manga.

Just laughing to myself remembering this bit:

Akito: She fell off a cliff!

Shigure: Did you push her?

I find it so funny that that strikes him as the first thing to ask, that Akito doesn't even think it's a weird thing to ask because it's totally something Akito would do, and that Shigure *knows* this and still makes the choices he makes. If Akito *had* pushed her, I doubt that would've been a step too far for him. I'm not sure there IS a step too far for him. Furuba toxicity is most entertaining toxicity, anyway.

Watching as an adult, it's creepy realising that some of the oldest characters in the series are around my age. Hatori's a doctor! And what am I doing with my life? Posting about how an anime is making me feel inadequate, that's what! Can't decide if that's better or worse than not noticing. xD

Whatever, Shigure continues to be terrible, and this is a lot of fun to watch.

Crunchyroll ads are especially irritating this season. They keep interrupting the episodes up at the emotionally climactic moments. They used to be less intrusively placed... :/

The crunchyroll ads were broken today so that after they ran, all subtitles disappeared. Luckily adblock is apparently working on there again, so re-enabled it and was able to watch.

Finished the season! If anyone on meme wants a challenge, try to watch this anime from start to finish without crying. Or even watch a single episode without crying lol.

... I never could get into FB. I tried, multiple times, but I just ended up dropping it out of boredom. The emotional beats are so loudly telegraphed that I just can't get into them. Also Tohru is boring (sorry!).

If you're talking about the first anime from 2004 or whatever, I agree it sucked. Otherwise, U R RONG. :p imo Tohru is brilliant but it takes a while to see what the writer's doing with her. I think she's actually one of my fave characters in anything, though! The new anime has shitty music that kills the mood sometimes but otherwise it's a good adaptation. I grant it IS melodrama, of the 'this is shamelessly manipulative BUT I'M CRYING ANYWAY HALP' style. I can see why someone would be turned off. But also, you're WRONG. xD I'm rereading the manga first chance I get!

Nah, my most recent attempt was the newest anime up until around where the sheep guy shows up. I'm sorry, I couldn't. And my first attempt was at least two of the manga volumes way back in the day, although in fairness I was way more into OEL manga than actual Japanese manga at the time.

Maybe the problem for me is that she's just so po-faced? I definitely can enjoy dramatic or melodramatic moments, but I tend to enjoy canons with a little more comedy mixed in, and having her wacky friends and the cat-boy's freakouts serve as the main humor vehicles was ... too jarring. It just made her seem even more boring in comparison. (No, I will not go and look up their names. Cat-boy it is! :P)

Anyway, don't let me harsh your buzz. Goddess knows my favorite canons are polarizing...

Sheep guy is the worst tbf.

I find furuba really really funny, partly cuz the contrast with the srs makes the silly stuff sillier. Maybe at some point I'll write a long-ass post about what I like about Tohru (tho short version is that I think she's partly a deconstruction of a popular manga archetype, and she's used as a way to delve into all the dysfunctional ways of thinking you'd have to have to embody it irl, and I love that shit. One reason I disliked the first anime was that it took her at face value and made her into this bland saviour who gave a helpful lecture each week. Which she still does, a bit, but the joke is that she's as messed up as the rest of them and playing that role to run away from her own issues).

Also dw about harshing my squee, I'm happy to like stuff others dislike, we'll just continue to be puzzled by each other. xD
