Not started it yet, but next on my list is Old Baggage by Lissa Evans. Never read her before but decided to try it since she signed the letter of solidarity with JKR.

60 pages in, enjoying it so far! It is a LOT of fun to read in the current political climate; soooo many things still have parallels today. It's set in 1928; the main character is an ex-militant-suffragette in her 60s, who is worried that the younger generation of girls don't know their history and politics, and wishes to rectify the situation. She's of a different generation to my grandmother but very similar personality-wise and manner-wise, so I'm finding that very funny as I read (it's written in a comic style *anyway*, but that does add a lot :P).

One of the feminists has proudly declared she will not be attending Pankhurst's funeral because she believes Pankhurst sold out and I am *cackling*, nothing changes. (Ok fair enough it's a contemporary book, but still. Also the depiction of fascists trying to glom on is spot on.)

3/4 through, it's kind of like a women's-suffrage-themed cross between 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie' (but much lighter and less creepy) and some Enid Blyton (and some E Nesbit?), which makes me wonder if the book started from a place of "What if Brodie supported the other side?". I feel like the references to Simpkin's impassioned *anti*-Mussolini rants are intended as a jokey reference.

Finished! Enjoyed it. It looks like it's part of a trilogy (though it definitely stands on its own since I didn't realise until I finished the book and saw the ads at the back :P), so I'll read the others sometime.

And in the meantime, must decide what to read next!

SA

(The tone and structure can be reminiscent of a children's book, but on the whole it works, and it tends not to be too saccharin)
