The salad advice for periods is so terrible that I have to wonder if it was deliberate sabotage of teenage girls.

It certainly made me think I was doing something terribly wrong if I listened to my body, for years.

I can sort of see it? Dark leafy vegetables are solid sources of iron and magnesium, and heavy/inflammatory foods like meat can make period cramps worse. But that assumes you're eating real vegetables and not a pile of iceberg lettuce, and even then I find it hard to get enough nutrition from salads alone. They're mostly water! Cook your vegetables if you want to be able to eat lots of them!

On the worst bits, I basically can’t tolerate anything fibrous and complicated. And it also combines poorly with the period shits, which my period book definitely did not mention. Once I surrendered to the desire for simple starches, sugars, water and salt, everything was much better. Which, again, was exactly what my period book told me not to do >:( And also, every teen magazine!

I realised I was craving a hunk of bread to rip apart alike a lioness tearing into a gazelle’s throat, and that dark chocolate tasted amazingly delicious, and suddenly when I followed those desires I didn’t feel as much like death.

My brassicas are my friends for every other day. We part ways when the period comes calling.

I've never seen the salad advice! I eat steak on mine. #girldinner
