I feel like I remember one of the Big O users initially making a bunch of posts about how she shifted GOP from Democrat. In the wave of GB posts now (Big O never missing a chance to shit on Muslims), I'm starting to wonder if some people are actively trying to push their agendas on there and also kind of think that's just crazy.

I know plenty of UK dans move around and expats exist, I just find it weird when you 180 from a bunch of Ameripol to UKpol.

People treat American politics like it's sports betting, so I'm not entirely surprised to see people dabbling in both.

I guess I’m weirded out by the dual lived experience claims mostly. It's consistent if you're making Ameripol claims and also UK focused. A tad weirder if you identify as a consistent Dem voter who switched parties then suddenly all into GBpol.

I am thinking I'm jumping at shadows, I just had a "huh, that's...odd" moment I guess.

There's a very prolific user currently focused on the rape gangs in the UK who has me very suspicious, so it's not just you.

(I mean, it could just be me jumping at shadows, too, what with the way the site's been lately. The current Big O echo chamber is such that they're as inflexible, irrational, and annoying as the TRAs. I think the one who accused Ben "I get death threats on the regular and hopes that my cancer will kill me" Ryan of being a TRA because he's a pronoun respecter was my last tiny straw with that bullshit.)

There are people with fucking weird posting habits for an aggregate site. Like the woman who writes a topical essay every couple of days, like clockwork, hitting all the rightwing talking points in this super performative style. I've assumed she's some ukip dude under a pseud, tbh, but will never have proof.

(Ukip being previous incarnation of Reform, for those not au fait with ukpol. Before that, that crowd was the BNP. Before that, I think they overtly called themselves fascists.)

Is this the poster who blockquotes entire articles with long passages of rambling commentary? I always thought she was just an overly-enthusiastic oversharer, but frankly I black out two paragraphs into any of her posts so I can't really speak to whatever she's going on about.

Ah, yes, almost certainly the same one then, I refer to her internally as "the racist $bird woman" and it's become a running joke in things I write whenever a character is idly browsing the internet and seeing depressing stuff, "the racist $bird woman was at it again".

As a $bird woman myself I hope I have a cooler identifying adjective. I'd prefer 'illustrious' but I'll settle for 'infuriating.'

Yeah, that's her. She reminds me of my mother, who goes on the same kind of rambling diatribes that hit every Fox News talking point you can think of, even though she's never watched Fox News in her life. Wouldn't be surprised if she's a plant, but at the same time, there are a decent number of women who are genuinely like this, and the Big O is a place where this kind of behavior is not only accepted but appreciated.

It's the consistency that gets me. It's a bizarre dedication to the sound of one's own voice. Most people have things to do. Posting the rants every so often, sure, but she seems to treat it like a job.

I think this is why I don't log in to the Big O anymore. I wish we would stop being weird about Muslims and I wish we would stop sounding positively insane about the LGB and I see why it's offputting to o/lesbians because it sure as shit puts me off.

I guess I'm not neutral because I live in a Muslim country, which is the most I'll say to be safe, but I swear we're more functional than some others who shall not be named.

Idek since I've not been round there for a while; there's one that did it first afaik and then some others copied the style, but a bit clunkier (or they're working together! But I think that would be tinfoil of me). Wasn't aware she was admired, but then people on there will admire anything. X_X Bad vibes, anyway.

I also suspect we're thinking of the same poster, and yeah I've wondered if this is just UKIP because honestly no one mainstream is going to care to try to capture the Big O demo, but this is the sort of fracture the UKIP side would love to exploit.

But I'll stop crunching the aluminium foil now.

Yeah basically. I understand the knee-jerking and the strong hostility after TRA batshittery or years of it, but I also remember joining the Big O early on and going 'what the fuck is wrong with you' at 'pronouns are rohypnol' people. My views changed in the years since so I guess that's where my sympathy for people who hard-shifted comes from. Nevertheless, whilst I can sympathise with feeling Ben Ryan and Jesse Singal are too concilliatory, I don't see the point in yelling at people because you feel their views are too moderate. It's the kind of radicalisation dynamic we don't need because that's what fucked up the TRAs to begin with (IMO.)

Fandom toxicity hurhurhur.

There are absolutely rightwing propagandists on there. Haven't been on in over a year, but there's all sorts of nutters (also a high proportion of batshit grifty trolls). Sometimes they're not technically breaking the rules afaik, because they may be a Republican woman who's a policy analyst as a job, and they aren't gonna have rules like "lw policy analysts are allowed but rw aren't". But yeah there's people on there who were quite involved with the tea party and stuff, who are there to listen for talking points and supply them. Well, it's the internet. That's gonna happen. There *was* an unusually high proportion of GB users when it started, because of the distribution of radfems, so that's not strange in itself, but there has been loads of sus behaviour on there overall, so I wouldn't worry that you're being too tinfoil hat.
