Self-indulgent soap-opera trash that nobody else will ever give a damn about. :) Currently enjoying writing about side characters in the lives of side characters in an original universe; am deriving amusement from how obscure it is and how nobody anywhere wants it. Wrote a crossover with a dead fandom yesterday! :')

WHY ARE THERE NO WORDS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

idk if there are words in other languages, but english has NO words

EVERY time I want to describe a gesture, or expression, there's NOTHING. I have to either write a PARAGRAPH, which kills the pacing, or write a line of dialogue. sometimes I don't WANT dialogue! And some gestures are silent on purpose!

Why don't we have any words for common gestures, or the expressions we see every day, WHY. Don't get me started on trying to convey microexpressions through text.

This is why adverbs will never die. Closest thing we've got.

I know I rant about this all the time, but dammit, I'm ranting again

Just invent more words, Danspeare!

If people who read fantasy novels can memorize forty different made-up words for magic or whatever, your readers can do the same.

Over summer I wrote a longfic. It went really well, the words just kept flowing and I basically wrote every free moment. However, since I'm done with it I'm in a horrible slump. I've started several fics for more than one fandom but none feel right. The story I started most recently is fully plotted out and is a scenario I'd really want to explore, but again it's not going well.

I think it's partly caused by my dissatisfaction with conventional fandom as a whole, but I just don't know what to do. I love writing, I want to write, but I can't even write a single sentence I'm happy with right now.

Any advice?

I think you just have to keep trying things and writing scraps of things until something pulls you in. Don't feel like it has to be plotted out, or like you need to write the project you feel you 'should' do. I get really motivated by the sense that whatever I'm about to write is wanted by NOBODY, so I get drawn to detailing the lives of the parents of a side-character's second cousin as they try to start a seafood restaurant, so maybe try something odd and unwanted.

Looking at writing prizes for the year and am considering attempting to bash out Insanely Jammy just to send a troll entry to a compo open to "women and non-binary writers". Needs first 50 pages of novel, 12pt. What's that, about 15k words? I bet I could put something together. >:) deadline end jan; is tempting... Competition has fee, though. Maybe should try something flashier.

Sometimes I get these really vivid memories of scenes I've written... Except I never actually wrote them down anywhere. I keep picturing the "camera angles" for this montage of this guy's miserable walk into work, and I remember the weather and the traffic and the conversation he had with a shopkeeper about a pasty... But nothing on the page. It wasn't interesting enough to write down. But my brain treats it like a real memory! Why? :D It was months ago!

Looking at writing prizes. Saw one, prize = £2000 , blurb like:

We prefer that writers do not use prize funds to purchase equipment, but instead use it to buy time off work or fund writing retreats.

Ha, love that there's a phrase for this phenomenon!

I swear I've gone "every character in this thing thinks they're on the west coast" before. Laughing that someone has coined "California Scenes" as the actual term.

Fixing the opening to my novel draft. It was rushed; having added 300 words, I am hoping it no longer sucks, but I won't know until I give it a bit of time and then read it over. Then repeat for like every other chapter. I've got 34 chapters of this thing. PREPARE TO GET SPAMMED WITH MY COMPLAINTS.

Something I wonder about, in fandom... because you have more say over the distance between authors and audience, I wonder how much is best. I both want to make friends and feel like if you're going to write for people, it's good to keep yourself a bit of a mystery, for the theatre of it, immersion, you know? Bit of a rhetorical question atm, given my fandom are all twats whom I want to avoid, but maybe one day it'll be relevant again!

This project feels like running into a brick wall; maybe that's a sign I should give up on everything I have ever attempted, forever. 🤷
