Bought a "charcuterie" plate at a restaurant. Turned out to be literally 16 slices of pepperoni for £8. That's 50p per slice. It tasted like any other pepperoni. Ffs.

I was expecting a good mix of fancy meats, maybe some olives and bread...

It might be 55F out and I might not have seen the sun in three days, but nothing will stop me from consuming the ice cream I deserve. Flavors I've had recently: matcha, lavender, earl grey, lucuma.

Never had lucuma! Was it good? I dislike lavender anything, but earl grey ice cream is nice (cream).

It's mellow with a hint of something herbal or medicinal. Not too remarkable, but this particular ice cream place is kind of hit-or-miss with its flavors and tends to err on the mild side. Unless it's black sesame. They have the best black sesame ice cream I've ever tasted.

All ice cream is nice cream!

So I was reading this article

https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2015/11/the-myth-of-easy-cooking/417384/

and thinking that everyone knows the real recipes are in the supermarket magazines. They print actually easy, practical recipes that use food they sell.

And so I thought I’d go looking because I haven’t added anything new to my repertoire for a while. And I came across this madness

https://magazine.co-operativefood.co.uk/2022/06/22/back-to-basics-13/content.html

DAI’S TIPS:
‘If your kids prefer cauliflower to broccoli, this works just as well for the base. Just make sure the ‘crumbs‘ are fully dried out. You can also swap the cheese alternative for houmous.’

Also

Although this is at least more in the spirit of supermarket magazine recipes.

:D

I guess I'll assume they don't sell gf flour.

Though I wouldn't trust any recipe that recommended co-op produce, anyway, because ime they always sell food that's gone off.

(tbf, I have a cousin like the semi -mythical child described. His parents trained him from babyhood to prefer carrotsticks to sweets, and so on. It worked. But at what cost?)

I agreed with the initial article but thought it chose a strange example here:

"There are no garnishes of thyme leaves in simple weeknight dinners"

?

I don't think of thyme as a fancy herb. But then it also mentioned asparagus in a can (?!), so maybe this is one of those Europe vs US things.

Hotpot place near my uni has a discount if you're eating after 11 at night. I don't understand; do they expect hungry students to head down to eat hotpot to work off late night project munchies? Much confuse.

Guess they must just have to throw it away otherwise so it encourages a few more people to hang around and pay for it?

Maybe they're trying to catch the late-night party crowd? The bars here close relatively early and alcohol can give you the munchies, but hotpot isn't exactly the stereotypical drunk food.

Today's Menu for the Dan Family:

  1. Mystery sauteed vegetables, featuring unidentified leafy greens (and weeds) from the community garden
  2. Mystery fried dough, purchased off an end-of-the-day surplus deal at a local Chinese restaurant
  3. Mystery fruit smoothie, blended at home with all the extra fruit in my fridge that's going soft

Made pasta. Everything turned out great except I decided to add arugula to the sauce before the pasta and now I have a giant pile of wilted arugula in the center that refuses to separate.

I am a fool.

Local tabloid is recommending a steakhouse for lunch. Given the general audience it caters to, I figured it should be alright.

Famous last words. A quick Google shows most mains cost upwards of a hundred bucks. The fuck?
