I'm going to go insane coming up with different translations for the exact same concept. English speakers don't even refer to people by familial relationship like the Japanese do.

Be warned that this image contains heavy spoilers for Mawaru Penguindrum, but it's pretty oblique if you've never watched the series since you won't understand what's going on. Actually, a lot of people who did watch the series don't understand what's going on. I love apples.

Date: 2022-11-24 06:31 pm (UTC)Sorry, my image search for "anime math" gave surprisingly shit results. I wanted the maths equivalent of "I'll take a potato chip... And EAT it!", but there was nothing with that drama. So I just found a weird apple prince and called it a day.
(Still meaning to watch Penguindrum, especially now I've seen Utena! Meme's recs are not forgotten! But I reckon it'll be long enough in the future that I'll forget the image.)

Date: 2022-11-24 07:03 pm (UTC)Closest thing I can think of is Mathematics Golden, a manga series about high school students competing to represent Japan at the International Math Olympiad. I remember the translator for this series also had a hard time finding the right technical terms in English, but at least the math was accurate.

Re: Manga and Anime - Mob Psycho 100
Date: 2022-11-18 09:46 am (UTC)I slacked off all day because the Mob Psycho 100 fanbook came out and I just had to do a shitty translation of some of the funny bits for my audience of approximately 2.5 people and a couple of Russian bots. Anyways, I figured I may as well use that to shill this absolute disaster of a main character, who is strangely relatable in this Q&A despite being simultaneously a flaming garbage heap and the seagull eating from it.
My nonexistent Japanese skills and terrible taste in characters aside, I do really recommend Mob Psycho 100. It's the series I usually suggest to people who want to get into anime but haven't watched anything besides Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh. There's a little bit of everything for everyone - it's got a distinctive and heavily stylized art style that really pushes the boundaries of animation as a medium, it's got visually stunning and creative fight scenes for action lovers, and it's got a ton of character depth and a very warm heart.
Simply put, it's about a guy who woke up one day, realized he's become an adult, and is now desperately trying to keep the world from realizing he has no damn idea what he's doing. Also, he might've accidentally adopted a kid. The kid might also have infinite power. Adulthood is complicated sometimes.
Fundamentally, though, it's a story about growing up and realizing that perhaps, the simple joy of existing, of connecting and sharing with others, of feeling and living and trusting - those are more important than anything else. You're the protagonist of your own life, whatever you might make of it.
Thanks for listening to my TED talk. Also, there's a giant sentient broccoli.

Wait until they find out where scanlations come from.

Date: 2022-11-21 09:35 am (UTC)Re: Manga and Anime - The King's Avatar
Date: 2022-12-11 06:33 am (UTC)I first encountered The King's Avatar more than half a decade ago, when the first season came out. It wasn't particularly good; the animation runs at single-digit frames per second and boasts awkward cuts to blatant CGI, including an eerily detailed McDonalds product placement scene that showed up at least once an episode. But the story pulled me in so hard that the moment the season finished, I picked up the source webnovel and read the whole thing - all 1728 chapters of it.
Maybe this says more about me than the series. I love esports and I love ensemble casts, and The King's Avatar does a brilliant job representing the kaleidoscope of personalities and narratives that make the esports scene. We're introduced to a colorful cast of characters that make up both the current pro scene and the rookies challenging their way to a title. Every character has their own strengths and weaknesses, their own reason for seeking glory - but they are united by their single-minded desire to win.
That's not to say it's a particularly well-written series, though. It spends way too much time wanking the main character's gaming skills, many characters fall into the trap of 'smart character written by someone who is clearly not smart,' and the primary antagonist is flatter than the output of a hydraulic press. Strip away all that, however, and it's just a story about a guy who got kicked out of an increasingly sanitized and commercialized esports scene, who starts his own team to remind everyone else why they loved this game to begin with. It's a story we've seen played out many a time in real life.
Anyways, I don't know if I'd recommend The King's Avatar in any of its many forms. The webnovel is mediocre, and the English translation makes it read even more childishly. The anime adaptation is incomplete, and no one knows when the next season will come out. There's a live-action that only seems popular with fans of Yang Yang's pretty face. But I am quite fond of it, in that nostalgic way, and I wanted to share a little of what I thought about it.
