I just want all Team Rocket's dreams to come true... I was going to say I want them to run the Salon Rocket forevermore. But no, actually, I want them onstage, doing musical theatre, as they were obviously BORN TO.

Today's episode:

Ep37, The Joy of Pokémon

Hilights:

* Misty greets this nurse Joy with something like, "You're much buffer than the other Nurse Joys!" Bold way to greet a brand new acquaintance!

* I know this is an episode about a Nurse Joy but still, she is oddly prominent in this episode. We get interior monologues (do the main trio even get many of these?), flashbacks... There's a fun bit where we see her on holiday with her family, and all of them are Nurse Joys. A friend has suggested Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny are themselves Pokémon; it does make sense.

* We still have Tracy with the party instead of Brock. Apparently Brock was switched out for a bit because the Japanese studio was worried an American audience would find Brock's depiction racist. So they left him on an island full of women so he could do their housework and introduced Tracy, who is paler and much bigger than the other characters. His arms are like twice the width of everyone else's legs. I guess they thought that'd appeal?

* Team rocket trap the party in a net that explodes out of a robotic magikarp. "Oh!" I exclaimed, "It's a *fishnet*!" I <3 pokemon puns. I wonder how many visual puns go over my head because they don't translate.

* Team rocket lament: "We got *in*volved right when it *e*volved!" Which led me to look up the word root "volve" outta curiosity. Seems to be "roll". To "evolve" was to roll out, unfold, unfurl. "Involve" was the opposite, to roll into, envelop. So I guess a volvo is a thing that rolls along. So Pokémon is highly educational, anyway. Apparently some old theories pre-theory-of-evolution thought it worked in a circle, ie: creatures would evolve to a certain state, then devolve, and repeat (sounds vaguely hegelian?). So maybe the word was chosen because people were already picturing circles and had a sense of a rolling motion? Idk, I'm going off my friend's knowledge of the history of evolutionary science anyway. Upshot is I now picture Victorian scientists picturing the development of the natural world like a Katamari.

* The team go underwater to see some Pokémon, and Misty doesn't come with them, which is a bit weird since she's the water Pokémon trainer. Idk why she hangs out with those guys; she's too good for them.
