I'm...pretty sure it's mostly because of Supernatural? There was a hella large amount of dogfucking in that fandom, after all. I still love the story of how the RPF side of fandom wrote dogfucking with one of the actor's dogs, but then the dog DIED, and so they had to change all of the pairings to Original Male Dog instead. XD

The thing that I can't get over with A/B/O is the idea of shitting out babies, I just can't keep a straight face! Just write magical mpreg! Or strict top/bottom roles! I think it even killed off the dom/sub AU worlds that used to be so popular, not sure if that's a good or bad thing. xD

SA forgot to add Teen Wolf, or course! I think the beginning of A/B/O predates that a bit, though.

I managed to miss all things Supernatural, so that would make sense. I know there are demons in in it and some guy called Sam and some guy called Dean and someone called Castiel? And the fandom argue over who loves who? And also it's cursed. And that's about it.

Also lol, I like how *that's* the line they wouldn't cross. "I'm fine writing rpf with a real dog but the dog has to be alive irl, otherwise the integrity of my fic will be destroyed!"

I went looking for a fic with those tags to see the phenomenon for myself, but got distracted seeing 4 works for the fandom "Supernanny". "Wtf, fanfic of that show??? Is this some godforsaken rpf???" But no. One is some kind of crossover, but the other three have just been miscategorised. I can sleep a little easier tonight.

Also searching out images of said sam, dean and castiel reminded me of how very much I am not attracted to men. *These* are the guys fandom obsesses over? A mystery! But then again I suppose the same people are pairing them with *dogs* so.

I think my first thought was "men really do just look like someone took all their features and squashed them". And given the hype, I was expecting *these* guys to look like, I dunno, Henry Cavill or maybe Legolas. I reached the Castiel image search and was like "But that's just some guy!"

Maybe they're amazing actors. I may never know.

Honestly I always thought fandom was being metaphorical when they talked about hotness and so on. Like I got that Castiel looks kind of friendly maybe and people were going nuts over Tom Hardy but legs open like a Denny's? Uh...

There's so *much* fic, though! 145971 Supernatural m/m. (Only about 51000 gen, which is the next biggest category). So maybe they're just really into the characters, but I dunno, I think by using Occam's razor somewhere Occam could never have imagined,we arrive at 'they find these dudes hot'. xD

From a former visual artist purely aesthetic standpoint, I think Ackles was legit gay porn star pretty back in his Days of our Lives days and is still pretty decent looking--he's aged better than a lot of pretty boys. Padalecki always looked weird to me, though, and looked even weirder as he buffed up and his hairline slowly retreated.

Ackles is also super charismatic, or was back in the day. 10 or so years ago, I remember some fan thing where he answered some fan question directly to camera, and it was like in Zoolander, getting hit with Blue Steel, like a physical force that made me blush and giggle even though I was alone watching a video clip on a laptop screen. Deeply weird.
