Oh, lol, I'm the same with book covers.

I'd like to read something really scary, sometime; I feel like it's been years.

ayrt The faceless pretty dress lady has been around for soooo long now and shows no sign of letting up. :( Especially egregious in YA, which I've mostly stopped reading. (I only give in for lesbian MCs, LOL.)

What kind of horror do you like? I'm into ghosts/haunted houses/cosmic/polar stuff, which tends to be creepy rather than straight-up terrifying. I can't read a lot of the hyped-up books because they're too heavy on the gore. And I'm very cautious with male authors because so many of them fucking LOVE using rape and sexual assault for horror.

ayrt

I think anything that suggests things aren't as the reader thinks? So paranormal stuff, stuff that implies there's some malevolence out there that we're unaware of, that a person isn't who we thought they were, or that reality itself isn't what we thought (and the reality is BAD)... that's the stuff that really fucks me up. Metaphysical horror, lol? And I suppose things that imply you could wake up tomorrow and find the world just got much, much worse. The horror would be in the lack of escape... so psychological horror, too. I'm not bothered by gore, myself, I just find it dull. And I'd personally be fine with assault used for horror but men seldom write anything involving sex in a way that isn't just... goofy. Hard to be scared when the writing itself is ridiculous.

da

Have you ever checked out Tanith Lee's stuff? I've been too scared to read her horror stuff, but she has a pretty good rep, and I adore her sff.
