Nice! Though I'm probably showing my ignorance about all things cat, but-- when I first read this, I was tired, misread, and I thought you were saying the cat now *used* the litter. But now I'm rereading and... I have questions, anon! Does this mean your cat now uses the loo? Does it flush? Does it put the lid down? I must know!

Yes, exactly! We leave the lid up always, so she doesn't have to put it up or down. We didn't teach her to flush, because we heard that when you teach cats to flush, they never STOP flushing because it's so interesting. But I work from home, so I'm checking it fairly frequently and flushing for her. She's still a kitten, about 10 months, so it was probably easier for her to learn how to use the loo than it would be for an older cat.

I'm trying to imagine it but... kittens are so small! How does she avoid falling in?

10 months is fairly old for a kitten. She's "technically" a kitten, in that we feed her kitten food for two more months, but she's essentially reached her adult size and weight.

And she crouches on the lid in an awkward fashion, sticking her but out over the water. It's both cute and hilarious.

:D

How did you train the cat? My partner, who had a few cats in the past, is curious! Is struggling to see how a cat could be convinced to go along, lol. :P

My partner did most of the work. I was too skeptical/cowardly.

1. Move her litter box to the loo.
2. Replace her litter box with a plastic insert meant specifically for toilet-training cats, but still put it on the floor.
3. Buy flushable litter and start mixing it in to her old litter.
4. Once you have reached 95+% flushable litter, move the insert to the toilet.
5. Expect a few mishaps. I had to clean poop off a bathroom rug once. But we had fewer mishaps than expected, only requiring separate cleaning twice. More annoying: the insert needs to be removed for humans to use the loo, which meant that we had flushable litter spilling on the floor daily.
6. Once she's adjusted to the insert on the toilet, remove the innermost (4 cm diameter?) section of the insert.
7. Give her 5 or so days on each stage of the insert, removing it ring by ring until you have reached the final ring. About halfway through, she stopped popping on the insert and started letting her poop fall directly into the water.
8. At the final ring, let the litter slowly dwindle until the ring is empty.
9. Remove the final ring of the insert, clean the bathroom thoroughly, and celebrate!

"My God, that's ingenious!" says partner.

(No wonder you were celebrating!)
