Do kumquats ever ripen? I've had some in a bowl for approximately 5000000000 weeks, and they're still greenish.

Related question: are kumquats ever nice?

They don't ripen after being picked. You might be out of luck. :(

I had some amazing candied kumquats in Japan once, but the ones I can get here are both expensive and sour. Supposedly the peel is the good part but I can't get over the peel texture.

Yeah, I saw people going 'the cool thing about kumquats is that the inside is sour but the peel is sweet!!!'. Not my kumquats. The peel was bitter as an orange, and the inside was inedible. Guess I'll leave them around and eat them when I want to feel something.

Inspired by Dan's post on how terrible kumquats are, I bought some.

They taste terrible. I'm not sure what I expected.

OG kumquat-skeptical dan, here. I still have two left, because not only do they suck, but the shop gave me a ridiculous amount. They did actually ripen a bit in the house, though, despite folk wisdom. After some 3 weeks, they're not *good*, but they're edible (and no longer green!). Apparently a kumquat is best eaten all at once. But they have pips! Idk. I considered trying to make a marmaladey thing with them and some cloves and brown sugar, but couldn't be bothered.

Also tried a papaya.

Packaging "perfectly ripe sunrise papaya!"

Papaya: *is green*

All of the internet: Sunrise papayas are ripe when they're yellow!

Me: *waits for papaya to go yellow*

Papaya: *gets the odd yellow spot*

Papaya: *gets a mouldy spot*

Papaya: *steadily rots and goes yellow at an equal pace*

Me: *cuts mould off and tries papaya*

Papaya: *tastes rubbish*

I dunno.

Suppose I mostly purchased it so I could point to it and say "papaya" in a patapon voice, so I got that out of it, at least.

ALSO the pips were spicy! So I was like "hm you could dry those to get fruity pepper". So I searched it and a guardian article came up suggesting that you could dry the pips to make pepper, and then all the comments were just like "What sort of wanker thinks of this??? Don't you have stuff to do??? Who the fuck has a papaya? Who the fuck fucks around making papaya pepper? Wankerrrrr!!!" so now im weeping onto the kumquats. at least they don't judge.
