I was thinking about Mannequin and Splash: films I have not seen since a single viewing each when I was in single digits.

I perhaps need to rewatch them, but my memory and impression is that these sort of magical realism transforming woman stories were romantic comedies aimed much more at men than such things tend to be these days: they are supernatural romantic fantasies for men. And then it occurred to me to wonder where those have gone. It’s all anime now, isn’t it? That’s where men watch stories about magical women who need them to keep their secrets, who rely on them and love them; stories about men obsessively loving a woman and that being heroic.

These are not amazingly wonderful things, but perhaps they are better than graphic porn and murder? Perhaps stories like that using fleshly women might be better than infantilised cartoon women, if young men are looking for those sorts of stories? IDK.

Men marry their selkie women, and try to keep them trapped in the human world. Married women are seduced into sexy affairs by handsome selkie men. I just feel like Hollywood is neglecting some core demographics.
