Looking for fun films or TV to watch in German (that are ideally originally made in German), with German or English subtitles. Not to judge, but nearly every film or show I find seems to basically be the Story of O, and it is so tiresome. It is like Germany, especially Berlin, is trying so hard to prove how cool and edgy it is: look at all the sexy sex and dying from drugs, and now this couple are sexily codependent, and everyone is dying from all the sex.

Could I have a fun comedy that isn’t trying to wave penises everywhere.

Goodbye Lenin is a single work. The silent era was a long time ago. There must be more recent stuff that’s a bit less boomer teenager?

All of my recs will be suuuuuuper dated. Sorry about that. Also I have no idea if these have the desired subtitles.

Der Tatortreiniger is absurd and delightful.

Doctors diary is trashy delight (but might be hard to get your hands on). In general I think the Swiss and Austrians have a better sense of humor... But this rec is basically a Bridget Jones ripoff so ymmv.

In general procedurals are fun. There are some fun extremely local ones if you have a city dear to your heart.

You could always check out https://www.deutscher-fernsehpreis.de/preistraegerinnen/ especially for older years.

Let us know if you find something good!

For films, unironically, look at playlists of airlines on long haul flights. Lufthansa always has a German language section and now that I don't live in Germany anymore I've watched some films while flying. Nothing memorable enough to recommend now but I've seen some fun fish out of water comedies that rely heavily on regional stereotypes.

Last time I was in Germany, I wound up watching nature documentaries dubbed in German. Idk if it's what you're looking for, but there is something quite amusing about hearing an old german man earnestly narrating the adventures of squirrel.

This is an utter waste of their time, because Germany will never, ever be REMOTELY cool. All I could think, when walking around, was "Wow. It exists: a place where people are worse-dressed than they are in Britain." And, unlike Britain, Germany is not capable of making cool music. The food is also not seasoned. There are many things I prefer about the culture (relative equality between men and women; clean streets; smoked salmon everywhere; abundance of holidays), but the people carry dorky purses and there is no cool to be found.

SD

I got on a metro and felt overdressed because I'd washed my hair and I wasn't wearing a tracksuit.

I can spot Germans and Austrians walking down the street in other countries entirely by their clothes, and I once made the mistake of telling a German this and they were very offended. I do love Germany, but there is something very 90s dungarees and shellsuits about all their fashions.

In the slot where they were supposed to put their "nightclub" aesthetic, they accidentally copy-pasted "primary school disco".
