I wondered about kendal mint cake (you never know when you might be required to go on a bracing walk!) but that's 1918+, apparently. Also ginger beer, but maybe that's more of a casual thing.

You may be stuck with the rich tea biscuits.

Ah, I meant to say early 1900s, not just 1900s. Don't have an exact time period, but anything up to the mid-1930s is probably fine!

A Victoria sponge is a requirement, though possibly you are not the person required to provide it. But someone must.

Hm, would you happen to have a preferred recipe? I can definitely make one as long as it doesn't require a stand mixer. Tried making souffle pancakes by hand a while back and it did not end well.

They mention mixers, but you can make sponges with a spoon without too much trouble.

Victoria sponge enthusiasts - strawberry or raspberry jam?

Will have to be store-bought jam, but we have a pretty decent jam selection. Planning to use whipped cream and not buttercream, if that affects anything.

Thanks for the suggestions, meme! I ended up making this recipe for cupcake-sized Victoria sponges, since I needed something easily grabbable for potluck purposes. Unfortunately did not come out quite as nice as the photos; the one time I actually needed them to stay flat my cupcakes bloomed into perfect round domes. Whipped cream also did not survive the trip too well.

But they were delicious. I overfilled them a bit with strawberry jam so they were also quite on theme, as they bled red just like the murder victim we discovered at our English country house retreat.
