In Spain, the host provided a five-step instruction manual on how to open the front door. We followed the instructions to the letter; the door did not open. We continued jiggling the door for another fifteen minutes until finally, the door had evidently had enough and swung open to reveal utter darkness. We scrambled around vaguely until we located a switch, which cast the courtyard in just enough dim light for us to locate and open the lockbox leading to our room. Surprisingly, the lockbox opened without a hitch.

Exhausted by our ordeal, we settled down to unpack and perhaps take a nap. Not a few hours later we were interrupted by loud knocking from the front (courtyard) door. At first we ignored it, but the knocking only grew louder and more insistent. Finally, my travel partner got up to let them in.

It was the host. Apparently she couldn't open the front door, either.

Anyways, most places I've stayed at in Europe have been fairly normal, but there's definitely been some quirky ones. In London, I stayed at a place where you had to go through two sets of doors to enter your room, but the doors opened in different directions (and didn't open fully) so you had to open one, enter the approximately 2' by 2' hallway between them, close the first door behind you, and then open the second door. That place was also run by an older man who spoke very little English and kept aggressively offering us pastries while holding a knife.

Airbnbs in Japan also have the same issues, except with less Werner Herzog.
