"soiwater" -- almost soy water, which is almost soy sauce, which is almost a word used for a shade of brown

Thanks for all of your suggestions! The answer was ASDA ECRU.

Personally I think everyone's ideas here were way better, but this particular crossword was pretty much impossible to do without looking at clue/letter overlaps. I ended up starting in one corner where there were two doable clues and working out from there.

Fuck it even friend's suggestion of "vegemite" (rejected because that was Australian) was better
