It's open for public viewing now, isn't it? Wonder how that'll affect their servers. The Big O got a lot of unauthenticated traffic and I wonder if that's the big difference between Vexxed's current server costs (which are tiny) and the Big O's $1000ish/month.

Big O always seemed too expensive to me; I assumed they had some managed services rather than DIY and that's where the costs came in, but idk. I thought it was that or it was bandwidth, but I assume they'd have known how to improve that.

Like, order of magnitude too expensive. But maybe I'm underestimating the difficulties at that scale. I had assumed they'd just paid for some things to be managed that can be done yourself if you know what you're doing, but aren't a great idea to mess with in prod if not.

Yeah, I'm not too familiar with hosting but the Fruit Farms apparently costs $18k/year to run and has both significantly more activity and more opposition.

That being said, Null makes a point of owning and managing the hardware himself, while the Big O was running on AWS from what I remember. Big cloud hosts are usually not very cost-efficient, from what I remember.

So good at remembering things that I forgot I'd already ended a sentence with 'from what I remember' when I got to the next sentence.

(know that feel; I do it multiple times in the same sentence sometimes!)

Yeah, my own hosting is much cheaper, but my projects are much smaller. Cloud providers are cheap for some things and expensive for others (usually the big costs come if you need more RAM and cpus), and some charge for bandwidth. So then you need protection if you have a lot of traffic. Cloudflare offers a good service on the free tier, but you can only use one domain or you have to pay for each additional one (I don't remember how much). AWS has a lot of services like db management, automatic service scaling to meet demand, and loadbalancing, that I've never used myself. I remember thinking the costs for those were crazy high but I haven't looked in years.
