I reported a member of our leadership team today in very careful language, because I’m pretty sure he was testing a boundary around safeguarding to see what he could get away with, making us complicit and establishing a precedent. His boss came to see me, and assured me that it had been taken very seriously and he had been spoken to, making it clear that this was not okay and shouldn’t happen again.

This afternoon, he was avoiding eye contact with me. It was blatantly me: it can’t have been anyone else, realistically.

I’m torn between optimism that this was a win, and he knows I will at least report things like this and people are aware, and pessimism that I have to work with him going forwards, he could retaliate, and also he could relatively easily push me out of things including situations such as the one that led me to reporting him.

Sounds stressful! But if he retaliates and you've got it all documented, I'm guessing you'd have a good legal case, at least. I want to say you're better-protected now than you would be had you not formally reported, if it's a law-abiding workplace.

Part of the issue is that I can imagine some fairly subtle ways he could retaliate, just talking about me more or less positively in various situations, mentioning and not mentioning things, suggesting people for things, etc. Professionally, I would generally keep all of this confidential, but personally I wonder if I need to quietly mention it (verbally only) to a few key people who I know will understand, so they can spot if he’s doing it.

Yeah, I don't have good advice on that (can you trust them?); I get the gentle freezing out of opportunities at work already, having pissed off various people who deserve to spend more time feeling pissed off. If you've got other friends there and a good manager, it'll hopefully balance out, but this dan may not be the best source of career-advice.

Went to quietly mention it to friendly manager (as a ‘interpersonal thing’ she should be aware of). She told me that person-who-witnessed-it-and-was-uncomfortable-but-didn’t-report-it had already spoken to her about it, in the context of looking out for me, because Boss had spoken to them about it (in the same way they spoke to me).

She specifically said to make sure I tell her if anything happens that worries me, or if I think anything is ‘starting’. Maybe this will be okay, and I can celebrate nipping something in the bud?
