Not sure this belongs in this section.

I don’t have a TV, because I only really watch streaming things, and I watch those as I move around and do things so my phone works best. I watch things I want to watch, and I don’t watch live TV, or TV news, or stuff with ads, because I generally find those boring. This is context. I don’t think I’m unusual in this, for people under 40.

There’s a clip going around of Kemi Badenoch on (I think?) some breakfast TV thing, or maybe it’s supposed to be actual news? And the two presenters are haranguing her for not watching Adolescence. If you’ve not watched the clip, it’s worth watching the longer version, because it’s so weird.

But the thing is, is it? Maybe this is what live TV is all like now. Maybe this is normal for TV news. Maybe it strikes me as alien and bizarre because I’m just not used to it.

I've heard about that, though not seen it yet. Or seen Adolescence. Because 99.9% of Netflix is shit, and all the people mistaking a fictional show for a documentary have put me off.

I keep seeing people talk about Adolescence and thinking that that cancelled Yuri on Ice movie finally came out.

This is the longest clip of it I can find anywhere.

If I saw this in a scifi dystopian film about a land obsessed with TV dramas, I would think it was ridiculous.

Yeah, it's breakfast TV. Timestamp 08:45. A big chunk of people are at work or going to work, and the BBC is patronising enough to think that anyone left at home lacks two braincells to rub together. It's the crappy morning thing that's just sliiightly less unwatchable than The One Show. (My friend's mum once got interviewed for that because she had chickens. That was literally the whole story: she had chickens.)

And yeah they're not real reporters, afaict they're the News rejects. Mr whatshisname and that woman everyone hates. (Tbf Idk if she's actually terrible or if the internet is just sexist; never watched her-- but given she presents BBC Breakfast I assume she is terrible by default.)

Hahahahaha, in which case Badenoch explaining that she has a job and doesn’t have time to watch endless television, and has other sources of knowledge than TV drama, is especially hilarious.

Yeah, BBC tends to be deluded about its own importance. It's not irrelevant, but it really overestimates how much people care what it has to say, or how much people enjoy the mountains of shit TV it puts out. They live in their own weird bubble, fwict. And the news page is often clogged up with loads of self-referential fluff that could only be interesting to a reader if they worked at the BBC. But the BBC can't tell the difference between "whole country affected by political matter" and "bbc presenter leaves bbc show that nobody watches", so they're given equal prominence on the news site!

Essentially, I think the BBC is cringe, it has been cringe for a long time, and it is at its most cringe when it references itself. The BBC, however, thinks it is at its most *lovable* when it references itself. And so I am reminded of that Mean Girls clip, "You think that everybody is in love with you, when actually everybody hates you!" I think its odd output makes a lot more sense viewed through that filter.

So they prolly thought they were being really big and benevolent praising a *non-BBC* show, demonstrating how in-touch they were knowing netflix existed, etc.
