Cryptic crosswords *are* common, BUT I don't think that many people have any idea what's going on in them. It's definitely a subculture. They're in most places where you find crosswords, but most people would not know how to solve them. An odd combination! Papers will do maybe alternating regular and cryptic, or 3x regular to 1x cryptic a month. The people who are into them are very into them, lol :P

Very cool! Was asking because I'm giving myself a crash course in cryptics (since the guy we usually outsource cryptics to is out) and noticed a lot of resources reference really British wordplay (e.g. gallery for TATE, isle for MAN).

Apparently they're a UK invention (though the crossword itself is US) so I guess that's why!
