I didn't intend to actually get wrapped up in Mystery Hunt 2024 Epilogue, but holy shit. Exotic Fen is probably the worst puzzle I've ever seen in a real hunt.

The puzzle says 'the intended experience doesn't involve hacking your browser,' but it was literally impossible to do anything without messing with the source code (you'd complete a level of the 'game' and it simply would not unlock a new level for you unless you remove the CSS that hid the other levels) and absolutely trivial to solve if you did mess with your browser. Once you did everything it just straight-up gave you the answer.

Don't know if their code was just broken or the game being stupid was something we were supposed to 'solve,' but hell if I'm going to waste time dealing with that.

Been working on this puzzle on-and-off since Mystery Hunt Epilogue ended in a vain attempt to improve my cryptics skills, and it might just be time to throw in the towel. Starting off my cryptic crossword journey with this absolutely cursed puzzle was probably not the best idea - it's 'double or nothing' where the grid is either two letters in one box or none, and some of the clues need words doubled or removed. It's a really well-crafted puzzle! I've just had enough.

Here's a few clues I actually enjoyed, though. Answers + explanations under each one.

> Oath made by Greek house: to improve failing grade [4]
FRAT (greek house) → (F → D, as letter grades)RAT → DRAT (oath)
> Payment processor of the Holy Father accepts cryptocurrency, finally [6]
PAPAL (of the holy father) + Y (last letter of cryptocurrency) → PAYPAL (payment processor)
> High five between perverted Lee and one senator Cruz [8]
ELE (lee anagram) + V (five) + A (one) + TED (senator cruz) → ELEVATED (high)

Anyways, if you like dumb wordplay like that, this puzzle's also cryptics but easier. Actually, half the ostensibly non-cryptic puzzles in this hunt solved to cryptic clues in the end, so there's really plenty of cryptics to go around! You can see why I had a bad time this hunt.
