Re: Internet Weirdness
Date: 2025-02-26 01:43 am (UTC)Actually, you know what this reminds me of? A while back I visited some lesser-known tourist sites in China, and they'd put up English translations for all of the interpretive signs. The translations weren't bad. Way too formal and academic for the subject matter, but grammatically correct and accurate. I figured they'd press-ganged some local English majors into writing them.
But you'd also get these bizarre spelling errors and typos, e.g.
> The pavilion is built on the place where celestial beings played chess and bad competitions with swords.
> Plagues are regarded as the epitome of Chinese literature beauty and handicraft beauty.
I didn't figure out what was going on until I saw a sign saying 'Dear tourists, welcome to the beautiful Luscribblegu Lake!' My guess is that they were writing out all the text and translations by hand, and whoever transcribed them back onto the signs didn't know English at all.
