No idea. Maybe they've bought into ambient sexist propaganda and think boys are stronger/tougher and more likely to survive? Maybe interesting to find out their intuitions on which sex has a stronger immune system...

Maybe it's the opposite? More boys are born, but more of them are weak and cannot survive the winter. That's why the gender ratio is almost equal when they're 14.

It sounds like something I might've assumed as a kid after learning that women have longer life expectancies. If women live longer than men, clearly we need more men to even it out.

I mean, that is what happens, but the effect is only enough that 51% of babies born are boys. But these children haven’t emerged into the world at 14 with no experience of other people: they’ve been at school since they were 4 or 5! Many of them have younger siblings and cousins!
