Re: Seals In Hats
Date: 2024-11-09 10:59 am (UTC)I would say the fandom exploded around the time of the PT, but I joined when the PT was released, and the EU was blowing things up with the Yuuzhan Vong war arc so I dunno. A lot of AU writers and people filling in the gaps in TCWMMP but Filoni's TCW got a lot of people on board as well.
Then yeah, the ST and spin-offs got a new gen on. From my POV, more ST than spin-offs. The spin-offs sometimes have a bit too much connection (sort of like MCU material now) but Reylos are a power unto themselves. (And that's fine, I mean, let them have their ships. People shitting on Reylos for toxic ships and whatnot feels a bit like fandom snobbery dynamics again. I'm sure some of them will take the wrong ideas but we don't need to relitigate Twilight fandom either.)
Re: Seals In Hats
Date: 2024-11-10 09:42 am (UTC)It's still a trip after working out all the series titles because I inherited all my Star Wars opinions from my high school calculus teacher and always thought that the accepted watch order was the 4, 5, 6, stop. But then I also thought TCW was just a Lego animated series, so I may have to admit that I might be living under a rock. A particularly PT-hating rock, apparently.
Re: Seals In Hats
Date: 2024-11-10 04:31 pm (UTC)This is why I think a lot of people are ignoring recency bias. Anyone who thinks the fandom was hunky-dory before that hasn't seen how PT and OT fans talk about each other!
Re: Seals In Hats
Date: 2024-11-10 04:35 pm (UTC)But also the only reason we needed TCWMMP as an acronym compared to TCW was, obviously, because Filoni made a series that jossed everything. Otherwise people would just call it TCW and call it a day.
Funny you say "4, 5, 6, stop" though because I also think a lot of PT fans don't really admit this but they don't like the films that much. The films are ok but most of PT fandom seems to be concentrated around either: (i) RotS, or (ii) the books, comics, and cartoons (so either TCW or TCWMMP.)
The only exception to this I've known is this one guy who adamantly insists that 2 was peak cinema and the fandom went downhill since.

I am not a Star Wars dan but that is certainly peak insanity. We quote 'i don't like sand' in this house on the regular.
Re: Seals In Hats
Date: 2024-11-11 08:42 am (UTC)He feels like a bit of an anachronism in an age where everyone needs validation and everyone has to peacemake in fandom by saying "well, we all have our own opinions." (I feel like the latter is a little connected to the former. It's a move that assures us everyone is valid even if we disagree.)
He's not rude or preachy about it but he's direct in his belief that anyone who thinks AotC isn't peak Star Wars is just wrong. No one and no amount of fandom has ever talked him off that rock. In a way I can respect that sort of single-minded crazy.
