I guess because my understanding from GCSE bio was that it's the shedding of the endometrium. But the uterus lining surely can't be infinite. So I had always just assumed that you stopped when there was no more lining left to shed.

Then I went on to do physics track instead so when I read something about say women who had non-stop bleeding for two to three months, I started to suspect my understanding of the stop mechanism was wrong because I kept wondering why they didn't run out of lining way before that.

And I'd happily fucked off to do physics so I couldn't just ask my bio teacher and call it a day. Alas.

Not a docudan, but my simplified understanding is that your hormonal cycle regulates when the uterine lining grows and sheds. Usually prolonged/heavy periods are because something went out of sync there, and the uterine lining grew thicker than it should. If the bleeding continues past an entire cycle, it's quite possible that the signals are so out-of-sync that your body is producing uterine lining as fast as it sloughs it off.

Doesn't have to be hormones, too. My mother bled for several weeks after childbirth because she had a piece of placenta still stuck in her and her uterus kept trying to flush it out in the only way it knew how.
