I find a lot of science and nature writing reads in this overly flowery way, atm. I dislike it. Though apparently that's the purpose of that site (well, they've mistaken it for "beautiful" writing, but still). But yeah, not keen on the style and I find it feels like the writers are going "sorry, our subject matter is boring, we know, we've tried to jazz it up!". Have more confidence gaiz!

Yeah, a lot of nature journalism - especially about animals! - really seems to prioritize narrative writing that dramatizes and anthropomorphizes the subjects. It's not the worst with a competent writer, but without one it apparently devolves into a fever dream about seahorses' heaving bosoms and distended bellies, I guess.

Hakai Magazine does some fairly solid marine biology articles that never come off as too flowery, but they're unfortunately shuttering at the end of the year. Just can't have nice things these days.
