Re: Coding
Date: 2024-10-09 06:07 pm (UTC)Mildly traumatized by this HN comment because I've been going through a bunch of code written by one of my copilot-abusing coworkers and abbreviating all the ridiculous variable names they shat all over our codebase, e.g.
> PseudoAnonymousIdentifierNetworkConfiguration pseudoAnonymousIdentifierNetworkConfiguration = new PseudoAnonymousIdentifierNetworkConfiguration(feederVariable);
> long pseudoAnonymousIdentifierNetworkConfigurationId = pseudoAnonymousIdentifierNetworkConfiguration.get_id();
We're already cursed with long-ass Java class names. No need to make it even less readable.
Re: Coding
Date: 2024-10-09 06:22 pm (UTC)But tbf I've seen both sides of it. I've seen codebases where devs have got around a requirement they've been given to document every function, by doing things like:
StartBoxFunction()
// This function starts box
FactorySetterUpgradeFunction()
// This is the factory setter upgrade function
And I've seen stuff like:
for i in mtools.j[3],
i +=73
g.append(i)
return(x, g, j[3][54])
If devs want to write shit code, they'll find a way.
Re: Coding
Date: 2024-10-09 06:44 pm (UTC)> At my last job, there was a frontend developer who added a linter rule that variable names must be at least 2 characters long. The project already had 20,000 lines of code. Every time anyone made a change to a file, they would have to rename all the one letter variables. Usually, this meant all the for loops in the file. I tried to explain how pointless this rule was, but he wasn't having any of it.
> Most people just renamed variables like i > ii, which was worse.
> Eye and Jay are go to as well.
One cannot underestimate the creativity of a dev who just wants to ship their PR.
