It's one thing if mankind is hunted to extinction by ChatGPT, but I really do object to being executed by Bing.

Uh oh, I have crawdads on my to-read pile! The blurb did make it look shit but I was recced it by a friend...

The author of Ready Player One is barely literate lmao.

The Martian was much better than I thought it would be.

Fifty Shades of Grey... Where to fucking start. But actually, I do think it's better than Ready Player One. I think RPO is the true indicator that his taste is irredeemably bad.

I'd recommend Snow Crash over RPO.

Oh, yikes, is Snow Crash that bad that it's in the same conversation?

I'd consider it weird/satire more than anything. It definitely is cyberpunk but it also mocks the genre. Which I like as I think cyberpunk sometimes takes itself too seriously.

I'll defend Snow Crash with, uh, something. I'm not going to offer up my life for it because it's deeply flawed and Stephenson can't write women for shit, but Snow Crash tickles some part of my brain perfectly with just how bizarre and hectic it is. Honestly, part of its popularity is probably in how it contrasts the more serious and moody Neuromancer, which is the other classic of the genre.

I do really like Neal Stephenson in general, though. It's probably an unpopular opinion around these parts because honestly, I don't think he's a great writer and I can absolutely see why people don't like a guy who constantly veers off into wacky indodumps where he illustrates the characters' masturbation habits with mathematical formulas. I just happen to be on the same wavelength.

Yeah, basically that's where I'm at. It's odd, and it tells classic serious cyberpunk to fuck off, and it has a weird idea mix. It's an odd place where I say "ok this novel is weird as all heck" as a strength of it, but it's what I like about it.

To be fair, I've read none of these books. I'm judging by reputation and in the case of RPO and FSoG, extension online recaps for the purpose of mocking. But the number of men on dating apps trying to impress me by reccing Crawdads ... that doesn't bode well, I'm afraid.

In that case I'm judging you! xDDD Though I also 'read' FSoG via recaps (the Jenny Trout ones, iirc).

I do think The Martian is worth reading, then. I didn't get past chapter 1 of RPO.

Fwiw, friend who recced Crawdads does usually have good taste. Maybe we can do some kind of meme readalong in a few weeks! :P

Haha judge away. But I also read those jenny trout recaps! Yeah, the Martian is on my list... one day...

Crawdads seems like the sort of genre I usually shy away from, to be honest. But I would follow a meme readalong avidly.
