It's one thing if mankind is hunted to extinction by ChatGPT, but I really do object to being executed by Bing.

This makes me feel smug about not getting round to reporting a bug I found in debian, or sending the fix I wrote.

(some further context: https://www.preining.info/blog/2015/10/looking-at-the-facts-sarah-sharps-crusade/ for some reason had never read this.)

Am reminded of how I'd like to find a free software project that values freedom of expression.

or maybe not. realised I should go lurk on kf linux thread for the gossip. they're mostly angsting about systemd but say arch is popular with the programming socks crowd. tbf idk if that's just users, but i think users tend to become mods become admins eventually. other suggestions were linux mint and lfs. been meaning to try mint but i always had the impression it was just a wrapper on ubuntu. lfs... seems like more of a learning exercise. that i've attempted before. but maybe i'll go back to it.

I think I'll stick with arch plan for now, learn some things, and then maybe give lfs another go.

Decided to download both! Knew my stock of usbs would come in handy. I kinda want to buy a pack of like 50 10gb usbs for this sort of thing, but then I don't trust the sellers not to put malware on them (or make them so shoddily that they may as well be malware). Maybe this is paranoid. Iunno. I can't keep up with any of it. "Just try a distro" they say. It's days of activity!

(I need to upgrade my distro and I don't like the direction the tech or the community have taken, so I want to find another "home". But I'm lazy so I prefer not to move too frequently. I may not have a choice. I'm trying to get comfy further down the stack so that I have a wider variety of distros to choose from, but I also mostly use my machine for officey things and I really like the convenience of a machine tailored to desktop use. Otoh, it still needs to function as a development machine. Afaict I'm the only person in the world with my user behaviour, so nothing suits. Unity got closest. It's a pain. I like the idea of just spending a day trying loads of live usbs, but in practice it takes so much longer than that to get set up and discover all the awkward details, and if you take too long, they release an update in which the desktop manager is fucked. Move Slowly, Stop Breaking Things, pleeeeeeease.)

I want to try out a bunch of different Linux distros, and usually I put a distro on a usb so I can try it for a bit (vs using a container or vm because I like to check it'll work with my hardware). So I could do with more usbs. But I like my usbs to be made by reliable manufacturers so I'm not plugging something sus in my computer; I don't trust buying cheapest off Amazon. It's prolly fine but.

What's the problem there? Sorry, this dan is as tech illiterate as they come and would like to know better.

More trustworthy manufacturers = more expensive usbs. There are v cheap ones on amazon, but I don't want to buy myself a virus (see: https://www.techradar.com/news/hackers-are-mailing-out-usb-drives-infected-with-ransomware ). So I'm stuck paying a bit more.
