Date: 2023-07-15 11:37 am (UTC)* Sparkles. A nervous woman who clearly has some extremely dark shit in her past that Netflix hasn't explored. Cries with relief every time she gets a gig pretending to be a mermaid.
* Morgana. Boss of a circus troupe that dances underwater dressed as mermaids. She's considered an elitist on the circuit. Sparkles once auditioned for her and flubbed it.
* Eric. Skilled underwater ballet dancer who makes wearable mermaid tails for a living. Has founded his own fishtank ballet show and is now attempting to hire someone half as competent as he is to dance in the fishtank.
* Tristan. Crack addict and ex-Disney performer, trying to get a job with Eric.
* Some woman whose name I forgot. Fat mermaid. Runs the Society for Fat Mermaids. Or maybe she just participates. I forget. It's hard for her to get a big enough silicon tail and the show casts this as an important political issue. She doesn't get as many gigs because she struggles to lift herself out of the fishtank.
* The Blitzunami. I've probably spelled that wrong. Absolute archetype of a narcissist. Has his image down, has the stage presence and attitude of a star, and has no discernable talent to go with it. Dresses up as a mermaid and has a rap career. Doesn't seem good at swimming or making music. His parents won't put him up; this is framed as cruelty; I think it's more likely he's hell to live with. Comes across as friendly but we do get a peek at the RAGE when a woman doesn't have his mic ready at his mermaid rap gig. Definitely a man of our era, right down to the bit where he calls himself "nonbinary".
* Woman who founded the Society for Afro Mermaids. This is based in Florida. We learn basically nothing about her except that she's founded this society, which is why I've forgotten her mermaid name. Along with The Blitzunami, she has applied for a gig on a cruise ship.
* Various old women who used to make a living swimming in tanks pretending to be mermaids. They warn about the frequency of ear infections.
They've stretched about 30 mins of material into 4 episodes, but all the same, I'm on the last one. Maybe we'll get a bit more detail about the black participants; so far it's noticeable that the white women get histories and dramas and the black women don't. And the black participants feel like they were picked to tick boxes, rather than for their mermaiding skill, so I can only assume there are some very pissed off overlooked black mermaids out there right now. (Not a clause I ever envisaged writing.) Needless to say, all the men get lavished with attention, despite the fact that only Eric is any good.

And here's Eric showing off some of his wares:

There isn't as good footage of the women, but it feels very unfeminist of me to only link the men, so here's a clip of Morgana's crew:

And, aha, the Fat Mermaid is called Ché Monique. I can't find footage of the afro mermaids.

I have not watched it, and suspect I will not. But I saw the first few minutes and thought meme might be curious.

Date: 2023-07-19 10:09 am (UTC)Ep 3: Canadians, eh? Of course Trudeau would have a sex-android. (Also, this one makes me wonder if I should compile a directory of films referenced in GITS:SAC and watch them sometime. May be a good way to get a list of classics.)
I'm enjoying the commentary on industry and bureaucracy more this time around. I enjoyed it the first time, but this time it feels more real. The bit where they ask for the specs on the runaway tank, so they can stop it, so the tank-making company gives them the specs, and then they attack and find out that the company withheld all the info they actually needed; I cackled. There may have been a giant stompy tank shaped like a scorpion, but still the most real thing I've seen on TV.
Also liked the depiction of the android company having a friendly relationship with the homebrew community that had inexplicably grown up around one of its obsolete lines. That "we don't technically support this, buuuuut" was quite sweet to see. And the major's rant about the creeps who wanted android girlfriends.
