Disclaimer: I am one of Those Gen Shippers so I may be biased here.

They're both weirdly earnest, if you ask me. You get weird slash shippers who love appropriating social justice language for their ships - it's homophobic for you to interpret their ship as platonic, for example - and go full conspiracy theory about how their ships have to be canon. One of my fandoms had some shippers go full cultist and start proselytizing about how the author included little hints about the characters' relationships, like showing them in the same panel as a canonically married couple to confirm that they were 'marriage-coded,' and they went on an entire harassment campaign against the official translator because she 'removed the romantic implications of their dialogue.' Not the first fandom that's happened in, either.

Most of the hetships I follow are rarepairs in slash-dominated fandoms, so the shippers just get really defensive and self-righteous about it all. Someone posts one vaguely negative comment - or even just an readily-misinterpreted positive one - and they go off on tweet rants for days about how they really 'don't care about your opinion' and they'll 'ship even harder just to spite you.' It must be tiring living like that.

Side note: I asked my friend for a second opinion and she said that you should be careful mocking Dramione shippers because their kink is humiliation.

xD (hm, I didn't feel much need to mock them before (not a dramione fan, just think draco is a self-evidently terrible love-interest for ANYONE, so feel like the mockery goes without saying), but now maybe I ought to just to add to the sum total of enjoyment in the world. :P otoh iirc rowling herself called them delusional so maybe that can't be beaten. or was that harmione? eh the hp fandom is too annoying in general for me to keep up with)

See, I don't find that weirdly earnest - I just think it's a bunch of shippers being a dick. So in my head the gens are weirdly earnest and the slash shippers just tend to be a pit of assholes who categorically deny they could ever be very fucked.

Tbh my initial thought was Reylos for mockery but at least Anidalas tend to just be earnest but not in the weird way. There's the fringe people who go Vaderdala but also people who sort of get that the ship just is duct taped together and not the OTP endgame perfection forever.

I suppose this is the way I see it:

The slash shippers just tend to be full of people who are full of it so you can mock them but they're not often sincere/earnest or I don't read them as it, they are just annoying wankers who lack self-awareness and who think their righteousness means they can conduct any bullying campaign they want to.

The gens are normally quite alright, but some ships attract the weirdly earnest ones I like to mock, like the Reylos casually coming up with a hundred essays explaining why they are perfect for each other and it's totally an okay relationship, also fuck you Anidalas. Despite their tendency to scrap with the rest of the fandom, they're just obnoxious in the way your thirteen year old self writing BTS bandfic was, not just full of shit.

I'd mock the Reylos and bandom, but the slash ones are - less mockable? Annoying in a different valence.

Ok this was way more than I wanted to write about my thoughts on various shipping groups :P

I guess I find nearly all tumblr culture weirdly earnest/humorless rather than some specific shippers. There was an acct the other day that had just discovered the natural world, had assumed nobody else had discovered it, and was doing that weird combo of aggro and "everything is awesome!!!!1" about trees. I can't be on there because I can't take anything as seriously as such people take themselves. And they'd freak the fuck out if they saw me Not Taking Them Seriously.
