Got into a comical fight with a malboro. It had killed most of the party, but Auron had evade and counter equipped. Unfortunately, he couldn't block confuse, beserk or darkness. So there followed a farcical fight, in which the malboro would blind auron, then would do an attack and miss, prompting auron to counter and miss. Then the malboro would confuse him, so auron would try to attack himself... and miss. Neither of them could inflict any damage, but the malboro could hit him with the status effects that kept the ridiculous situation going, and stopped us accessing the menu. Cue endless attacks missing on both sides, while we couldn't do anything but watch. Went on forever; we were laughing our heads off, "this is the worst day in Sir Auron's life"; went to get a cup of tea and came back and no further hits had been landed on the malboro. Wondering if we'd need to reset, then suddenly the malboro ate him! Seemed to get rid of the status things; we finally got a turn and got outta there.

I misread 'malboro' as 'marlboro' and then didn't see the title of this post, so for a moment I thought that cigarettes had taken a serious upgrade to their lethality.

:D tbf I wouldn't be surprised if the monsters are named after the cigarettes, and got misspelled at some point during the translation from Japanese to English... or maybe as an attempt to avoid copyright problems. (For those unfamiliar: they do an attack called "bad breath" that gives your party irritating status ailments so the battle drags on, though normally not as dramatically as the one I had. (And since people were discussing scholomance-- I picture malboros when I read "maw-mouth"!))
