I remember learning about The Pillow Book in high school world history. Can't remember why it was important enough to be mentioned - it's contemporary with The Tale of Genji, which bears the slightly dubious distinction of being the world's first novel - but I remember thinking it curious that it was mentioned by name in a course that otherwise skimmed both Asian and cultural history.

I should really give it a read, one of these days.

I heard about it when I read Ruth Ozeki's My Year of Meats, which opens each chapter with an excerpt. MYoM is very 90s but I also enjoyed my read of it. I too thought "oh I should read the Pillow Book" but I never got around to it... but at least I can claim I've read a few bits and pieces!
