For whatever reason it's easier for me to believe that screens damage your eyes but I should probably be more careful about both because I'm one that didn't need glasses until mid twenties...

Screens absolutely. Pandemic working from home really did a number on my eyes.

What I was told is that focusing for too long on something at a fixed distance (like a book or computer screen) without occasional glances at objects that are farther away damages your vision. I was honestly prescribed to spend 20 seconds every 20 minutes looking 20 feet away. Screens probably make this problem _worse_ but spending hours in a dark room staring at a book without distance variation probably isn't ideal.
