I think the pragmatism is a problem in some quarters; I defo see "oooh, no, don't deal with themmmm, it'll be bad for your reputation!" from types that have influence over tech decisions and are minimally informed about politics but think they are experts, and then the business jumps on the bandwagon because they fear the shitstorm and they have to trust to the tech person's expertise because they don't have any. (And I know you're joking about the rhetoric re: genocide but maaaan is it a sore point for me that they'll happily make every excuse in the book for doing business with parties that *actually* contribute to genocides, but then suddenly freak out at the potential future harms caused to middleclass American men by some massive Heath Robinson machine that starts with a sixteen year old anywhere on the internet being sarcastic.) I'm all for businesses having principles if they can get some fucking priorities while they're at it.

I sometimes think the pandering around intrusive language started as a way to give these morons a bone. You're a tech firm who wants a juicy defence contract, but your technical employees, whom you can't work without, are all "don't be evil". So you distract and divide them with This Bullshit.
