They were in a plastic wrapper, so I guess baked (but not thaaaat fresh)? Best before is 2 weeks from now and they say they're meant to be eaten within 3 days once opened. They're in a cupboard now. I found the brand:

Of other snacks, I'd say they're most like eccles cakes, though tbh I prefer the filling in eccles cakes.

Ah then no idea. I've not had eccles cakes before so I might aim to try that as I lack that baseline for comparison! I do like lao po bing, but often can't justify getting a pack of them.

Eccles cakes are filled puff pastry with the same shape, but the filling = raisins/currants and cinammon. The good ones have a soft filling; the bad ones have some mysterious hard bits in there. They also tend to have a sugar coating that gets baked on so they're crispy. I used to like getting the massive ones from the supermarket bakery, that were the size of side plates and probably totally inauthentic; normally from what I've seen they're about the same size as the wife biscuits. Lowkey one of my fave cakes. :P
