OKAY. Am hijacking the "small" tag. if you want to write spoilers, put them in "small" tags. There's probably a better way to do it but it's a pain to check because the preview feature doesn't work properly, and it's not like we use small text much. Can look for a rarer tag to (ab)use later.

(for curious nonnies: dreamwidth disables a bunch of tags for anon comments, including (to my knowledge) anything that can be used to indicate a tag for some custom css that a community have agreed on. (and testing the behaviour is a bit annoying because you get different behaviour as a logged-in user.) they also have a preview feature, but this doesn't apply all the scrubbing they do when you actually post, so it's not representative. they let anon users style their comments with some list of predetermined tags, which this bottle of condiment hasn't yet found laid out anywhere and is instead using trial and error to locate. so current approach is to take one of the 'allowed' tags and change its behaviour, so it sets foreground and background color to the same value)

This is probably a stupid question but since everyone's anonymous how do we tell who's talking to whom? I had this thought while staring at the large tree of messages, posted by a multitude of incognito gyns.
(e.g. say I'm having a conversation with someone, how would I know I'm still talking to the same person?)

One more thing: is there a way to set comments to show "latest first"? At first glance this was a rather intimidating list to spelunk through. The only hope I had of retaining some semblance of organization was by going directly to the masterpost and pressing the "Flat" button.

Yeah, latest first is by going to last page of Flat.

Keeping track is optional. If you want to communicate who you are to others in a particular thread, people use these abbreviations:

SA Same anon
NA New anon
AYRT Anon You Replied To
DA Different anon (as in, not the Anon You Replied To)

You can also do more complicated things like A(AYRT)RT.

And sometimes it' clear from context you're responding to the same person. But otherwise ... it's a mystery! Whee!

Additionally, some nonnies do identify themselves on occasion, e.g. spider nonny (the nonny of the spidermites from a while back.)

Other than that, it's very much an 'as needed' basis: as other nonny pointed out, DA, AYRT and so on are helpful in disambiguating.

yeah this style of board uses that ambiguity; it lets people separate details that they fear might identify them if they put them all together. on the other hand if you get a bunch of replies, they might all be from the same person, so it'd be a bad way to establish popular opinion.

yeah, I like reading through the threads afterwards sometimes, but I'm always reading in flat view myself unless I want to post something.

It also allows one to seriously wind up the sensitive, if one is slightly trollish, by impersonating people or carrying out both parts of a conversation, for example. But I don’t think anyone would do that for evil here, rather than silliness, because we’re all too even-keeled to get wound up.

I love flat view. I use the threads if I'm looking for, say, the venting thread because I need to vent about something, but most of the time I'm team flat view.
