Had a pretty awkward conversation with someone I was aware of from online, who seemed to be waiting for ‘something’ to happen. But also, kept asking for where she could find me online, and I kept deflecting. I have been active in ‘this area’ online for over a decade, but under a wide variety of usernames, and I am not linking a single one to my real-world identity. I don’t have a Twitter account, because it wants my phone number. I don’t have a Facebook account because why on Earth would I want one. I have real-world contacts from real-world actions, who can vouch for me.

Now I'm thinking about those people on the big o thread earlier who were like "we need it to be possible to donate without it being linked to a user email" because they wanted to be untraceable but couldn't even figure out how to get alt accounts for themselves. I doubt it's as high stakes as they think it is but it still makes me worry for them a bit. Like, you're scared of the effects if that system gets compromised, but you're happy to use that one same account to say publicly how many kids you have or what city you're in along with all your views? Feels like a confused idea of risk.
