Reading an old 80s IBM UI guide. Interesting because it makes it clear how so many things we take for granted had to be consciously invented, and also interesting seeing which ideas did not work out as intended. (Few interfaces today will make a sound when something unexpected happens; it's too irritating. The "some users don't need to see the cursor, they'll be fine without it" convention also didn't last.)

Wondering if anyone has written a lighthearted book that approaches computer user interfaces in the spirit of a Victorian evolutionary biologist and describes them as though they were living things with curious characteristics, along with some discussion of extinct traits. I think this would be a very entertaining book. I don't have the expertise to write it, but surely someone out there must, if it hasn't been written already (though I haven't found it yet).

I daresay a lot of mechanical devices could benefit from the same treatment, though the gimmick would wear off.
