I’ve been trying to stay legit, put money in creators’ pockets, etc, for a few years. Show comes along that it is not possible for me to pay to watch: owners don’t want my filthy British money, it would seem. So, finding it seems justified.

a) Wow, the hosting landscape has shifted and changed since I’ve been gone.

b) There are a lot of websites that only show up for me in searches if I use TOR, let alone accessing them. Did we know the extent to which this was happening?

iirc tor uses ddg which is actually bing? I get the impression google has got heavy-handed with suppressing results and nobody else gives a shit. google has been steadily getting less useful for me over time... except when I want some mainstream result; then ddg always fails to find it. My workflow is usually, 'use ddg to do a search, add g! for images, oh for fuck's sake it wants me to do a captcha, click on traffic lights, see result and close the tab, oh no I forgot something, more traffic lights, fuck this, close the browser'.

I should have said, I don’t use Google. In this case, I’m comparing ddg with and without tor.

Oh, oops... I assume it's geoblocks? Tech people were up in arms about uk censorship years back but I don't think it got that much mainstream coverage.

I’m assuming so. Not sure if ISP (voluntary), ISP (required), or other.

But yes, it looks pretty extensive, and I feel like I should have seen a lot more sustained and continued outrage, as it is clearly constantly updating and spreading. I was surprised that the sites didn’t even show up as results on DDG: that felt new since last time I looked. Stuff used to show up in results, but you just couldn’t access it (sites were blocked, but not by search engine). Then Google started censoring and playing around with results, but telling you they had done so. Then doing so unflagged. DDG has a reputation of not doing that.

Anecdotal but what I saw went down like:

Tech folk: Hey this is a big problem! *Point to snoopers' charter et al*

UK public: Meh

Tech folk: Well fuck you, too, then. *We* know how to use VPNs.

And on the party side, the impression I get is that only the libdems are in the current century when it comes to tech, so obviously that's not much help.
